I have recently acquired a very old computer, one only capable of running windows 95. That said, i set it up and using a very old copy of internet explorer (version 2 i think) managed to get a hold of Opera and have been using that to browse the web. However, i have even more recently wanted to change to internet explorer, more specifically 5.5 as it appears to be the latest that will run on windows 95. That said, i managed to download a copy of it (in fact quite a few copies of it), however none seemed to work. The problems included one saying that i had to clear my internet explorer cache, subsequently i cleared my Opera cache but to no avail.
What i'm asking is this, where can i find a stable copy of internet explorer 5.5 (microsoft no longer seems to support the older versions), and if you don't think that it's a problem with the copies i'm getting a hold of then what might be the cause of the problem.

    Thanks for your time

    Yours Frustrated

Some general clean-up things to try that may help. They seem to cure lots of strange Win9x issues.
    • Get a copy of scanreg.exe from any Win98 PC. Maybe the ME version will work as well but I'm sure about the 98 version. All you need is the .exe file and just copy it to the hard drive. No install needed. You DO NOT want or need scanregw.exe because the GUI version will not work.
    • Get rid of all the junk files to include all temp files, temporary internet files, files in c:\ with a name filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, etc.) and empty the recycle bin.
    • Boot to DOS (not a DOS window).
    • Scandisk /autofix /nosave /surface and run it.
    • Scanreg /fix followed by scanreg /opt. You can combine both switches in one run but I don't like the results as well.
    • Boot to windows safe mode. Win /d:m will do it.
    • Run scandisk again using standard and letting it fix errors. The DOS version can't see long file names and won't fix any problems with them.
    • Run defrag.
    • Reboot to normal Windows.
    • Download your IE install to the PC and run it from your hard drive.
