I have a windows 98 system that I am running DSL on off a third party ethernet card.

I just purchased a new X2 system that will have WinXP pro installed. The mobo is an Asus ultra, I believe, with built-in ethernet.

Can someone give me a quick rundown on how to go about installing the broadband on the new computer? I'm thinking it's jsut a matter of activating the ethernet and plugging in the external dsl modem, but I really don't know. And, having been on Win 98 for so long, I'm not even sure how to go about getting the ethernet port up and running, in any event.

    thanks...

any pre-installed version of xp should just connect as long as u've got proper cables.

if u'r current DSL setup is just a modem direct to u'r old pc, then u'll probably need to pull the power from the modem and then connect the new machine. plug the power back in to the modem and power up the new pc. u'r done.

if u've got a router between the dsl and pcs, just hookup the new box and u'r done.

some dsl systems install software - particularly PPPoE accounts - that may be problematic here. tiz the reason a router that does PPPoE is the way i'd go but ... in the event, u DO have such an issue, u can call the DSL support and ask them what they recommend.

if i were doing such and wanted to get both machines (or more) on the same DSL and the DSL software was an issue, i'd probably opt to remove the dsl software, buy a router that does PPPoE and start fresh.

Thanks to admin for moving my initial post...I guess if I'd thought it through I would have posted it here.

    Anyway...a follow-up if I may--

Is there a way to allow a win98 computer with an ethernet card to connect to the internet through a Winxp computer that is directly connected to DSL broadband via a built-in ethernet and an external dsl modem. The two computers would be roughly 50'-75' apart in different buildings.

Some sort of wirteless router system? (complete newb to this aspect)

And is there a danger that others can then tap into the wireless portal?

yes. xp will work as a router ... easiest way is to run the home network wizard.

thanks, Skeet...both times. I'm not sure how to do this but at least I know it can be done. My new box is due in on the 28th and I'll have to get that set upbefore I can move forward. I asked about wireless in particular because I don't want to run cable between the buildings or the computers either.
