Need some assistance out there on going dial-up to dsl.

Have a possible 4 node windows based file and print sharing network client. 2 nodes have 56k modem ability not simultaneously web connection. Using a 4 port hub.

Client wants to go DSL. Client also wants simultaneously connection for the 4 users. Can I not just replace the hub with a router, hock the dsl modem to the router and boom its done.

Is it as easy as I see it in my head ??? Information would be greatly appreciated. When I was in corp. America I worked primary from the closet to the user and everything inbetween. I know how to setup a small network with a hub and internet sharing ability but not quite sure on this one.

Yup, stuff the 4 users into a 4 port router, and you're done.
The only software to change is remove the DUN stuff, and set up whatever the ISP requires, usually PPOE or somesuch.

To be specific, make sure you get a router/switch combo device. Costs less than just getting a router and hooking the hub to it and better performance as well. Also, a router might not offer NAT (essential) or DHCP (nice to have). The combo devices all will.

After that - just like you thought and reboot says.

Um...I haven't seen a router (for home use) that isn't a switch, ever, except for the single port ones. They all have NAT, and they all have DHCP as well.
Linksys, SMC Barricade, and D-Link are all good brands, with my preference in that order.
    The Linksys BEFSX41
    SMC Barricade 7004VBR
    D-Link DI604 or DI704
The Linksys has one thing the others don't, and that's SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). A fancy term for SERIOUS security, which examines every packet of data going in and out.

reboot - I agree the SOHO "internet routers" are all a router-switch combination /w NAT and all the usual goodies.

But I did want to clarify since folks have been known to buy used equipment and if they go a-looking on eBay for "router" they might get just that and be somewhat upset. :)

Good point Newt. I hadn't considered the ebay angle. I never buy anything on there, it's not worth the hassles. Much nicer to get a warranty and tech support with a new item, especially for those who are not so computer savvy.
