I have created a service on a W2K pro server that I need to login with a specific network account. The service is part of a database server\client app that creates output files from the database. The account I need to use for the service has write permissions to another server on the network.
From the 'Log On' tab, I choose the 'This Account' option and tried typing the login name as many different ways:

    "domain "\ "username "
    "username "@ "domain "
    "username "@ "domain ".net

The service acts like it accepts the entry, but it does not. The service can not write to the other server location. I can setup the account by clicking the browse button on the Log on tab and navigating to the correct domain. The domain I am searching has thousands of logins, so I get a message that not all of the accounts will show. And of course, the account I need does not show. But if I pick an account from the window and give that user the write permission needed, then the service is able to write to the other server. How can I enter the account info manually so that my service recognizes it?

You might try setting up LMHosts on the server and preloading the domain in question. Then put in entries for the PDC and any other machines that will normally be acting as domain master browser for that domain.

It might speed things up enough to make it work. I suspect the behavior you are seeing now is from the attempt timing out.

After further testing, I found that the services were working correctly with the different logins. The client I was working for failed to tell me about some policies set on this server. It was not letting my program access certain dll's that it needed. Thanks for the help.

LOL - clients are like that. Hope he/she is paying you enough for the job.

And glad you got it solved.
