Whenever I install service pack 2 from Windows Update, my internet stops working. I am connected, because I can use AIM just fine, and I pinged my IP address with 0% error, but I get "page cannot be displayed" for every site I go to. I would like to install SP2, since my college recommends it, but I can't use the internet and have already had to reinstall windows and do system restore to fix this problem.

Do you have a firewall, and does it have MD5 signature checking? What this means is that it checks to see if the program has changed, and when you install SP2, Internet Explorer is changed, and is not being allowed access.
Also, if you have a firewall, you need to disable it while install SP2, as it enables it's own built in firewall, and will conflict.

And if you have a third-party firewall, you should run either it or the XP SP2 firewall, but not both. I suspect the third party firewall will be the better choice since it monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic. The SP2 firewall monitors only incoming traffic.
(P.S. Both MS and Zone Alarm advise against running both firewalls.)

The thing with me is i dont trust the XP Firewall. I've found out that even in the SP2 the firewall is not that great. People have still gotten around it. If you want a good firewall (that's actually free) try ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com )

But yes Welshjim is very much so correct when saying not to run both firewalls at one time. Things just get screwy at that point.
