I have setup backup routines using the ntbackup app. that comes with 2k3 server 2003 for many clients, however this problem has me stumped. I have travan tapes, When i try to run a backup manually it runs fine. When i schedule one it will not run at all, the tapes are in the free pool and ready to go. Even when i force the schedule to run, it says could not start task. No other details are in the backup log or in the event viewer. I tripled checked that i entered the right password. I could reboot the server tonite, but i do not know if that will solve anything. Is there a service that controls the task scheduling and or backup routines that i am not aware off?
    thanks for any input

Here is an error message i found
    "Wednesday.job" (ntbackup.exe) 8/10/2005 11:00:00 PM ** ERROR **
    Unable to start task.
    The specific error is:
    0x80070005: Access is denied.
Try using the Task page Browse button to locate the application.

There was a MS KB article but it did not solve the problem either.
i set the security on cmd.exe to allow for anyone to run anything just to test it and it still will not run.
    arggh!

That particular failure usually indicates you are trying to run the scheduled task without specifying an account & password that has adequate rights.

It runs fine manually because then it is using credentials from your logged on account.

the task does not run manually, only running the program that the task is supposed to run runs. So the task does not run manually or automatically.

i changed the account it runs as to bsa/Administrator
changed user to NT Authority/System with no password and i think it works,
    i will update u tomorrow.

unfortunately i am still having the same problem with the NT account running the backup. Now it runs but only for 45 secs. the task logs says it started the backup. the backup logs in the event viewer says it started the nt backup and then 45 secs later finished the backup
the backup takes about 2.5 hrs. normally.
    Any suggestions.?

    thanks

    Finally fixed this issues.
I created a new Admin user.
Setup him as the one running the scheduled tasks, set him as the full owner of the task, and gave hime full permissions.
It worked yesterday so it should work for all my tasks once i change them over too.
    Thanks
