    I have a MSI Shuttle just got it from a friend who built it.

    My problem is I have a copy of windows xp OEM (not copy as in illegal its brand new not on another pc)

    Its basicly an Athlon 64 3200+

    The problem I think lies in the serial Hard drive. When I got it it had windows xp pro on it which was my friends version just to show me it worked.

    I managed to format the drive in some RAID my friend says it shouldnt be RAIDED

    In the BIOS before I formatted or did anything the HD was not showing, just the cd drive. If it is a serial drive should it not show in the BIOS?

    Basicly I can get to the point where you choose which drive you want to install windows on and there is no drives to select it just says

    <none>

    <none>

    and if I try anything I get the message

    "A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage.

    The problem seems to be caused by the following file setupdd.sys "

    I can still format the drive in that RAID utility thing so it must be connected correctly which it seems to be when looking at it.

    But when I went into the recovery console from the setup it says there is a

    c, d and e drive

    It has no floppy drive just a hard drive cdrom/dvd rom drive combined! So is the other a partition or something.

    Help me get my new putta working please

    Hello colic!

    Last weekend I installed Win XP Pro on a new computer based on an ASUS P4P800 motherboard which has integrated SATA controllers. Not the same as Your MB but similar problems.

    Connected to the MB were 1 SATA, 1 PATA and 2 opticals.

    During POST, the BIOS didn´t display any detected devices at all but when entering the BIOS setup, they were there. I set the boot orders, including the prefered order between the SATA/PATA and the opticals.

    Since both HDDs were unpartitioned and unformated, both were 160 GB Seagate Barracudas, to be 100 % sure that the OS ended up on the correct HDD, I physically disconnected the PATA during the installation.
    Before doing that, I had two identical HDDs to choose from during the initial XP setup screens and no way to figure out which was which.

    After the successful installation of XP, connecting the PATA and partitioning/formating all space on both HDDs, during startup POST still show no detected devices but when entering the BIOS they are there.

    From inside XP, in Disk Management the PATA is Disk0 and the SATA is Disk1. This is probaly why it is essential to specify the exact boot order in BIOS before attempting an installation of XP since the normal boot HDD is Disk0 and as I understand it, You have no HDD connected to the IDE controller(s).

    A hint:

    If the HDDs are larger than 132 GB and Your version of XP is without SP1, then install SP1 before continuing the partitioning/formating beyond the one onto which XP is installed.

    XP without SP1 can not see HDDs or partitions larger than 132 GB and if You partition say a 200 GB HDD then after installing SP1, You will be rewarded with 68 GB unpartitioned space!

    HTH,
    Christer

    Edited:

    Since RAID requires two HDDs and You´ve only got one, then that´s the wrong track to follow.
    (I don´t know much about RAID but that much I know ...... :eek: ...... I think!)

    Personally I would go get a floppy drive. This will make it possible to run a small program called delpart which deletes all partitions on the HDD to ensure a "clean" start.

    You can get delpart for free.
