Mozilla 7.2 is my web browser and I use Earthlink for e-mail. When I am in Mozilla and I see a site I want to e-mail to someone, my default e-mail program does not start. Instead, Mozilla wants me to set up a new account for e-mail. I've looked around at settings in Mozilla and Earthlink, and cannot find an answer. Any help would be appreciated.

    Jeane,

Open Windows Explorer, and click on View | Folder Options | File Types
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
    Click on Edit
Highlight Open, and click on Edit
The application used to perform action should point to Mozilla:
    "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\mozilla\mozilla.exe "

I checked the setting as you suggested, the application being used is Earthlink, which is what I want. Why is it when I am in Mozilla and I want to send a page or link that my default e-mail program (Earthlink) will not come up?

    Hi Jeane,

I didn't realize that Earthlink was a third-party Mail Program. If you are using a Mail Client other than Mozilla, then you need to add this script in about:config

    network.protocol-handler.external.mailto
    Enter a Value of true

If you've never used about:config, this how to add a setting:

    Clear the Location Bar
    Type: about:config
Right click anywhere on the page
    Select: New | Boolean
    Copy this: network.protocol-handler.external.mailto
Paste it into the "New Boolean Value" field
In the "Enter Boolean Value" field, type: true
    Close the window.

Mozilla should now recognize the third-party Mail Client.

    Hi Ramona,

I did everything you said, double-checked it, but it still did not work. Do you have any other ideas?

    Thanks for your time!

If you are running XP you could try DefaultMail 2.0
'DefaultMail 2.0' helps you set the default email client on a per-user basis.
It is a tiny 11k zip install. I've used it when I switched to FF/TB. After I removed Mozilla 1.7, IE/OutLook wanted to become default email... even though Thunderbird was set at default. After a couple of passes with this program, opening and closing Thunderbird, IE/Outlook finally agreed. Unfortunately it only works on XP.

2K and XP are kissing cousins, 99% odds it would cause no problems.
Zip install has no registry writes. But there is always that last 1%.

    Jeane,

When you checked the URL:MailTo Protocol in the Registered File Types, can you post the Earthlink Mail path here please?

    Thanks,

    Ramona

    Thanks Jeane,

Yes, that's what I wanted to see. Is this by chance web mail? Do you access this account through Mozilla Mail & Newsgroups ?

    Jeane,

O.K., been snooping around the Earthlink site, and beginning to understand what Total Access is about. Let me do some more searching in their KB and see what I can come up with on the mailto protocol.

The e-mail I use is the standalone that comes with Earthlink. I can also use webmail from Earthlink, but I have never registered for that. Do you think if I used webmail from Earthlink that would solve my problem?

    Hi Jeane,

Not much luck there. Check this Registry Key for me and tell me if the same path is there, as was in the Registered File Types:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

    Hi Ramona,

Yes, it is the same path. If I can't figure this out, I'll just forget about it. I might want to try using Mozilla as my mail client -- I've been reading on the Mozilla website on how to do this -- but as usual I get a bit nervous changing things.

If you come up with anything else, let me know. Thanks for all you time and help. Much, much appreciated!

    Jeane :)

    Hi Ramona,

I contacted 2 support persons, one on the phone and one via web chat. Both could not help me. After keeping me on hold for long periods of time, and in order to get rid of me, one person told me to contact Mozilla and the other person told me to clear my cache and cookies, restart the computer, and all would be fixed. Well, that didn't work. Even though I can send links using Internet Exoplorer I'm still using Mozilla as my default browser -- I like it so much better.

    Thanks for all your time,

    Jeane

    Jeane,

When you installed the Total Access software, did you check this box, or one similar, in order to make Earthlink TotalAccess MailBox your default Mail Client:

Make TotalAccess MailBox Default Mail Client

I don't really remember what I checked when I installed Earthlink, but I am sure I wanted Earthlink to be the default. When I go into e-mail options it shows that Earthlink TotalAccess Mailbox is the default. There is also a box with a check mark that says "check for default e-mail program. "

In Mozilla, under Preferences, Advanced, System -- is there anything under protocols that should be unchecked? Probably a dumb question, but I'm not sure what some of those are.

    Jeane,

If Mozilla is your default browser, then checking HTML, http, and https, is all that's necessary.

Under Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups I would uncheck everything.
