I am using Firefox, version 1.0.

When I click on File/Send Link nothing happens.

Previously when using Netscape 7.2 my mail program would open allowing me to choose a recipient and then send the link.

    Thanks.

I have no idea why it does not work for you. Firefox does not have mail of its own, but I have Firefox and Thunderbird as default browser, and mail clients respectively. And, firefox will place the link, waiting for me to select an address to use (I have about 10 set up), an address to send to, and any message.
It is no different from Mozilla 1.7.5, which I use now.
In your case, it should open whichever is the default mail.

Firefox queries this key to find the location of your default mail handler:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

Its value for the Default entry should be:

    "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

If all that looks OK, then it may be an internal Firefox problem that may require a reinstallation.

It tells me that Outlook Express is the default mail client. I don't know how to deal with non-gecko based clients, nor if FF and OE speak to each other.
There was a preference to set, in Netscape, and you may need it in FF.

"Create a new text file named user.js in the same folder as prefs.js
    containing this line.

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

If quick launch has been selected, it will be necessary to exit quick launch
or reboot for the change to take effect.
Apparently NS then picks up the line, uses it, and henceforth maintains it
    in prefs.js. "

Thanks. I am printing off your notes and will check it out.

I think I've tried having Thunderbird and Mozilla open and it doesn't work.

Are you all saying that I HAVE to have Thunderbird as my default e-mail program to get it to work? I always opt to not have it as my default mail program. Maybe that's the problem?

You don't need to use Thunderbird. The button opens OE for me.

Well, I've checked everything. I still can't "send" a link. All of the other functions seem to work as they are supposed to.

I rarely use IE or Outlook Express. I primarily use Netscape 7.2 and Messenger. I had Messenger running while using Firefox and it still won't work.

I don't know what else to try. :(

    vegaspat,

When you say "nothing happens" do you mean that literally? That is strange indeed.

You have to ensure that you have selected the Netscape 7.2 Mail Client as the "default ". Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups That should be sufficient.

    Open Windows Explorer
Click on View | Folder Options
    Click on File Types
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
Click on Edit, and then Edit once again
In the field for "Application used to perform action" is Netscape listed there? If not, and this is the Program you want to use as your Mail Client:

Click on browse and and select:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe "
    Include the quotation marks.

    Ramona,

I had to go with the instructions in your last paragraph.

Now when I opt to send the link from Firefox, the compose window in Netscape pops up. But it has caused one little problem. It also opens up and leaves open a blank Netscape page.

I tried about three time and each time after completing the composition, I am left with the original Firefox web site and the blank Netscape page.

    What now?

BTW, thanks for getting me this far.

I don't know about Netscape, but Firefox opens my Thunderbird. I send the link, and TB is gone.

    vegaspat,

In Netscape 7.2, check this setting:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System

Ensure that nothing is checked in both sections.

In the Registered Files Types, URL:MailTo Protocol, when you click on the second Edit tab, check to see if DDE is enabled. If not, enable the DDE setting.

I'm doing some searches, as I know I have seen your most recent problem, somewhere!

DDE was ENABLED and I've unchecked everything in your other suggestion. All was checked except BMP and ICO images.

    Still having the problem.

    Thanks.

    vegaspat,

Do you have your browser open when this occurs? See if it happens if the browser and Mail Client is open.

I found the correct entry for your MailTo Protocol, and I'm too embarrassed to tell you where!

To the: "Application used to perform action" field add this: -compose %1
The field will now look like this:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -compose %1

    HTH,

    Ramona

Firefox and Thunderbird are my default browser and email programs. I've been following this thread with some interest, as I've never used Send Link..., from either Firefox's File menu or a context menu, preferring, instead, to link sites or pages to descriptive words within a Tbird message.

When I select Send Link... from a menu (or from the context menu for a specific link, as opposed to that for a page) a Tbird composition window opens with the link inserted. (The main Tbird window does not have to be open.) As it does for Westside, when I send the message the Tbird composition window closes normally.

    From Ramona:
    Open Windows Explorer
Click on View | Folder Options
    Click on File Types
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
I'm puzzled by this, as I have NO URL:MailTo Protocol entry listed in File Types, yet everything works properly, as previously described.

    Again, from Ramona:
Do you have your browser open when this occurs?
I don't know about Netscape, as I haven't used it in nearly two years, but with Firefox/Tbird, the browser window must be open. Otherwise, there's no way to access Send Link.... ;)

    Jim,

Windows XP doesn't have the URL:MailTo Protocol listed in Registered File Types. I don't know why, unless the option for default Mail and Browser in Add/Remove are sufficient...

    Big Fat DUH!

Okay, I am getting a little confused. This is what I now have in the registered file types.
    C:\Netscape\Netscape7\Netscp.exe "%1 "

What will happen if I insert -compose in the line?

I also am using Windows XP and even though I got to the Files Types a little differently than your instructions, I DO have Url: Mail to Protocol item. It is near the front of the list. I had to go to Tools/Folder Options/File Types.

Are there different versions of XP? Mine is the Home Edition.

And I see you already realize that the browser HAS to be open to use the Send Link option. <G>

The blank window that keeps hanging around after I send the link has the link name in the location bar. This doesn't happen when I am just using Netscape 7.2 and Messenger.

So, there you have it. I am really confused now.

    vegaspat,

You run Windows XP, and the URL:MailTo Protocol Registered File Type was listed in the File Types? Another strange thing, as two other XP users have said they don't have that file type listed in their Registered File Types. Somehow I thought you had Windows 98.

O.K., since you had the URL:MailTo Protocol, then I would include the -compose command line argument. It would be as I quoted earlier:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -compose %1

That should fix the problem. Yes, there are two versions of XP, the Home Edition, and the Professional Edition.

The URL:Mailto Protocol disappears from the Folder Options filetypes listing when Thunderbird is set as the default mail program.

If I reset Outlook Express as the default mail program the URL:Mailto Protocol entry reappears.

With Thunderbirs set as the default, everything seems to work fine. I can use File : Send Link in Firefox and Mailto links in Firefox or IE open a Thunderbird mail composition window.

Here are the associated registry entries that I could find:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOZILL~2\\THUNDE~1.EXE -compose %1 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto\shell\open\command]
    @= "C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOZILL~2\\THUNDE~1.EXE -compose %1 "

I'm guessing that the disappearing entry is a Thunderbird quirk when it's set as the default mail program.

I'm using WinXp Pro SP1 in case that makes a difference.

    Ramona, Mike ...

This just gets more and more curious. I, too, am using XP Pro SP1 and, when I set Outlook Express as the default mail client, I still don't show URL:Mailto Protocol in the File Types list, even after rebooting.

Even more strange, with OE set as default, when I select Send Link... from either FF's File menu or from a link's context menu, ninety-one IE (not OE) windows open, each displaying the message "Action canceled. Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. "

When I reset Tbird as the default mail client, everything returns to normal.
