It used to be when I put a dvd or cd in either of my drives to play, a box would come up and I could select what program I wanted to use to play it. This no longer happens. Instead, I have to navigate to that drive and click on it and it plays with a program that perhaps wouldn't be my first choice. Is there a way I can change things back to where I make the choice of programs? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Open a file folder. Click on Tools menu & select 'Folder options'. Then select the 'File types' tab. In the top part of the new window, scroll down to find your file type for DVD, and 'select' it. In bottom half of window look for "Opens with ..." If you want to change this application, click on 'Change' A new window gives you some options to "Open with" Select the one that is appropriate for you. Check that the little box is ticked which says "Always use the selected program to open this type of file. "
