Hi. New here so here goes...
    Running XP:
I'm looking at the detail view of a folder with many files (couple hundred). I'd like to be able to select just the files with a certain extension - ie, all the .img files or all the .doc files, but not sure how to approach this. I know it was possible way back in the 3.1 days but XP eludes me for some reason. Any help out there???
    Thanks.

Thanks, Arie. But there are times when the same file Type could have 2 different extensions and that's more what I'm after.

Be interested to know which... but anyway, in that case use the search function to search on the extension *.XXX

Ah yes - I hadn't thought of the search - thanks again.

To answer your thought, suppose I was looking for a .jpg image file but it used a .jpeg extension, or an .mpg movie file with an .mpeg extension - that kind of thing. Anyway, I'm hoping the search function pans out.

ah, yea, I couldn't think of those. Anyway, search would "fix" this ;)

Okay - I suppose I'll have to play around with the search function a little to get more comfortable with it, but I thank you all - the semi-colon trick is a big help, also... Perhaps a 3rd party utility might also be of assistance.

You can add other columns to the view by rt clicking the column row. You should be able to use File Extension.

Tony, while that's available in Windows 8, I didn't find it (File extension) in Windows XP, nor Windows 7.

File Extension not found in my Windows XP. It would be cool if it were there, though. Seems like the Microsoft guys overlooked a few things.

I use File Locator Pro (screenshot) - search results shown for *.xlsx & *.xls - just enter in File Name, separated by semi colon.

Essentially the same as Doc's solution - possibly more elegant!

AgentRansack is the free version of File Locator Pro - try it :)

Thank you all. Gonna give your solution a try, Pete, and I think that short of upgrading to another Windows some variation of what you all suggest will do it for me. Now, how do I mark this thread "resolved" since you people have obviously resolved my problem...

How about Display > Sort by > file type? that would put all the *.jpg together and all the *.jpeg together, probably one group right after the other.

    Thank you all.

This issue has been resolved and marked but it came back at me for some reason.
