    Anyone had any delays in viewing the network (ie workgroup) using XP? Seem to take forever to view all the PCs...using a variety of OS - W2K, WinNT, Win98. I am running peer-to-peer. Each time it seems to refresh. Even when I just want to view a particular file. As opposed to W2K; XP takes foreverrrrrrrrrrr.....Any suggestion or help appreciated. Thanks.

    I see the same 'problem' - my network is just a couple of PC's - main PC plus laptop, both running XP Pro. Set up using the Wizard. I basically use it for transferring files between the 2 m/c's. CAT cable plugged in as and when I need the facility.

    Much slower first time off if the laptop is booted with the CAT connected, somewhat faster if the laptop is booted first and then the cable plugged in. Once the network is established there is no obvious delay.

    Any explanation/fix would be welcome here too.

    Simply network ... XP and w95.. router / ISP share / network link / printer share. No problem with the network view response, but file transfer is nothing to write home about. Basic data file transfers/backups are liveable. I started to transfer some MP3's to the w95.. 3 to 6 MB files. I can burn a 700 MB CD much faster than sending 1 MP3 over. Link speed is stated at 100 Mbps. I send over the MP3's because the w95 has no CD player.

    Do these things

    First! Go into Services and disable Indexing!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Then

    Stop windows from searching for scheduled tasks.

    Save by export the following registry key
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_USER\Software\Microsoft\Window
    s\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
    ]

    Find the key with this name:
    D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF Delete only this!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Soup up TCP/IP

    Same for following save/export then edit to the following

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
    es\NetBT\Parameters

    modify these values as shown

    BcastNameQueryCount=dword:00000001
    BcastQueryTimeout=dword:00000020
    NameSrvQueryCount=dword:00000001
    NameSrvQueryTimeout=dword:00000020

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Then

    Disable Network Access Control using IEEE 802.1X

    In network Properties.
    if you have an Authentication setting then choose it and uncheck the Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X box.

    If you do or do not have the above then check for 802.1X in the NIC properties and disable it. Assuming you do not have Wireless on this machine.

    Mr. Flynn,
    I always read your posts with great interest. There is always a 'nugget' or two of valuable information residing within. My two computer network was also unbearably slow. I followed the steps you laid out and the difference is amazing. I'm slowly getting a handle on this network 'thing' (the keyword being slowly). Thanks for all the knowledge you share!!
