Why do I receive a Critical Update message daily for me to update 817787 Security Update Windows Media Player 7.1? I have done this update and it pops up every day for me to update. Why is this? I am running Windows 98.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Rosa W--I think you are going to have to delete the Registry key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows Media Player\wm817787
Windows Update apparently is not seeing that Key anyway and thinks you need the patch.
Removal of the Key should then allow you to "reinstall" the patch one, hopefully, last time.
As always, back up that part of the Registry just in case you need to restore. To backup, click (on the Registry Edit window) Registry|Export Registry File and put the file somewhere you can easily access it. I doubt you will have to, but if necessary to restore, right click on the .reg file you have created and then Merge.
For info on the patch, see
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=817787
The above assumes that you have indeed successfully installed this patch and that WU is just not seeing it.
You can check that by going into Registry and see that the above Key is there, as well as the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows Media Player\wm817787\Filelist
If these keys are not there, then post back, since you have not installed the patch.
