I receive the following error whenever opening Thunderbird. (newest release)

"Could not initialize the browser's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser hebavior when accessing security features. "

Been to website below with no success.
    http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Could+not+initialize+the+browser+security+component

Searched Google. Nothing but thousands of forums with little information.

    Any suggestions?

In first place Thunderbird, and the browser references are not applicable to it,
In second place there is a link to Ramona's Netscape (includes TB) Solutions . The link which you provided refers to Firefox. Were you trying to open a page from link in Thunderbird mail.
Just to be sure, which version have you been using. The latest Thunderbird is 2.0.0.9, and the latest Firefox is 2.0.0.11.

    Suzette,

Create a new Profile, for test purposes only. See if Thunderbird will open using the new Profile, and if so, then the old Profile is corrupt. You will need to copy data from the old Profile to the new Profile.

Let us know what happens with the new Profile.

    Westside,

I don't know why "browser" is part of the error verbiage. I've found quite a bit of information on the error, and more workarounds to try...

    Suzette,

If the new profile works, then before transferring any personal data from the corrupt profile, try this:

With Thunderbird closed, open Windows Explorer and browse to your original xxxxxxxx.profilename folder:

In the xxxxxxxx.profilename folder, rename these three files:
    cert8.db to Xcert8.db
    key3.db to Xkey3.db
    secmod.db to Xsecmod.db

Check this script in the prefs.js file, by opening the prefs.js file with WordPad:
    user_pref( "security.ssl3.rsa_rc2_40_md5 ", true);

Start Thunderbird, and let us know if this helps.

    Also check these Thunderbird settings:

    Tools | Options | Advanced
Enable both Options under "Protocols "

    Tools | Options | Advanced
Enable: "Select one automatically" under "Cerfiticates

If any of the above fix the problem, then ensure that you delete the new profile you created, using Profile Manager.

To access the Profile Manager, right click the Thunderbird desktop icon, and select: Properties
To the Target line add to the end of the path: one space, and then -p

You target line will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p

    Unsuccessful. . .

Performing all of the steps that you each suggested has helped. I will be uninstalling ALL of Thunderbird Thursday afternoon (1/24) and reinstalling the complete application. (Of course after backing up his entire email system.) I will let you know the results.

If you uninstall the program, you will not accomplish what Ramona suggested, since the info is in the Profile which is not removed. Did you create a new profile as Ramona asked?

    Mr. Westside:

Of course I've performed everything that you and Ramona have suggested. I would not be reporting that they did not work. Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 still gives the same error.

Hopefully a reinstall will clear things up. That is what the user wants. If the reinstall does not work--I will be back.

There is no harm with a reinstall, although 99 times out of 100 only a new profile cures all ills.
Let us know if it does not work.

    Successful. . .

Reinstalling the application was the solution. Of course, backing up all data necessary and removing ALL Thunderbird AND Firefox worked. I removed Firefox also only because the error has specified "browser" and when the browser was executed, there was no error. Go Figure. . .

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

"Why do a majority of fixes have to come from re-installing? "

    Suzette,
I said that in 99 of 100 cases, it is a profile error. I was not kidding. It happened to me that in one case removing the program, and reinstalling it, picked up the profile, and everything worked fine, thereafter.
Why would Firefox be involved, while opening Thunderbird, is a mystery.
