    Hello,

Does anyone know how to hide personal data from prying eyes when the computer is sent for upgrade or repair. I find it uncomfortable to thing that strangers can read my emails, stored letters anything. Why won't Microsoft let us password folders?

Encryption software would work but only if you use the one sort for ever.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Digas

    Hello Digas,

If you don't want go the encryption route, I would copy personal data off and delete it.

BTW, MS did have a password protect folder app, but pulled it due to complaints by businesses and parents for obvious reasons.

There are password protect file/folder applications, you're going to have to search for them.

    Regards - Charles

Digas - Welcome to the Board :)

Presumably you have considered using the Encrypting File System native to XP Pro when using NTFS? - not sure if it is available in Home.

See Help & Support - Encrypting File System overview

Other thoughts would be to store all your sensitive data on a separate drive or partition which could be backed up to an external source (CD/DVD or USB drive) and the partition or drive formatted or securely erased before sending the computer out. In the case of a separate drive this could simply be removed.

I ran into a similar problem as you.

I wanted a program that would encrypt any folder/files I choose.

The MS App (privatefolder is it's name) only had a secure encrypted folder on the windows partition.

The program I use is called Blowfish Advanced CS.

It's free and allows you to encrypt not only files, but folders as well on any partition/drive.

It can also securely erase the original unencrypted files.
