I want to make a document in which I compare to subjects. One subject will be in the left column, the other subject will be in the right column.

I have been trying to do this using section breaks and the column function in Word.

I make a section break for the relevant passage, then make two columns

The problem is that I cannot separate the parts I want in the two columns.

The text in the left column is longer than the text in the right column, but the text from the left is running over into the right.

I cannot seem to bring the text back from the right column into the left column so that one subject in the left is separate from what it is being compared to in the right.

the next experiment I will try is to make the two column format before adding the section break.

    suggestions appreciated.

You will not achieve this using columns AFAIK.

I suggest you insert a 2 column table and set Table Properties - Borders & Shading to None and under Options uncheck 'Automatically resize to fit contents'.

The contents of each column can be aligned to suit - L, R ,Centre or Justified.

This is what I was aiming for. Borders and Shading does not always seem to work.

    1. did you mean to do the research by joining the mailing list that this link brings us to?

    2. I tried to make the document more readable by alternating borders and non-border tables. I could not get some borders to take. But I was able to remove all borders, which is less satisfactory but the two items being compared are less clear.

No - Google the problem as I did for you.
