I'm using a several year old computer (200 MHz MMX) with Windows 95. I intend to upgrade sometime to a new computer with XP, but would still like to network this computer for my kids.

I've been running IE and Outlook Express 5.0 (version number shown was 5.00.2314.1003). My bank upgraded their software with "new security features," and I was no longer able to access my account online. Speaking to one of the tech guys at the bank, he recommended that I upgrade to IE 5.01, and he mailed me a CD supposedly containing this. (IE 5.01 and 5.5 are no longer offered from the Microsoft Website).

I tried installing his CD, and after lots of installation activity and a reboot, it came back again as 5.00.2314.1003.

I uninstalled IE 5.0 and the uninstallation routine from Microsoft took me back to 4.01 successfully. Then I tried the 5.01 CD again, and it installed a slightly higher version (5.00.2919.6307), but still not 5.01. I also tried installing the "high encryption" pack for 5.01 from the Microsoft website, and that didn't change anything.

My computer doesn't meet the technical specs for any of the currently available versions of Windows. I haven't been able to find a place to put Windows 98 on it, and I've heard that may be more trouble than it would be worth anyway.

With Microsoft no longer offering 5.01 and 5.5 (which are supported by Windows 95), and my inability to obtain Windows 98 (which would support 6.0), do I have any options? Are higher versions of IE still available somewhere (I did a quick Google search for 5.01 and 5.5, and have not been able to get a working version of either of those off the web yet).

Or am I just hosed now, with this computer being relegated to only surfing older web sites that don't use newer internet features?

This seems like a Catch 22 . . . old software won't work, can't get or buy new software that will run on my old computer.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Terry

Newt--You really do have to do a little digging to get to the site that tquinn needs
    http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
tquinn--Hopefully you now can install IE5.5 SP2. If so, don't forget to go to Windows Update to get the various security and other patches.

    earlier windows versions

Thanks for the pointer to prior versions of Internet Explorer. I've downloaded those and will give them a try.

If this works, you've saved me a lot of grief.
