My computer seems to not have faith in detecting the existing drives (cd rom/burner, dvd rom drive). I've had these drives on my machine for about a year. The problem seems to be my primary drive (Acer cd rom/burner). With no disk inserted and everything operating OK, I will notice the drive is either signalling the processor or the system is sensing for the presence of the drive. My computer/settings/system/ device manager shows both drives present and working OK. When the sensing takes place, my computer seems to pause for a few seconds then resumes ok.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

My computer:Oper system wind98se, amd thunderbird 1gig processor, Nvidia gf3ti video adaptor with lastest drivers, creative soundblaster memory 512Mb, harddrive WD 45gig, creative SB live audio card, acer cd rom/burner/ samsung dvd rom drive, power supply is Antec 350w smooth power and MB is a transcend brand.

Have you tried going into device manager and removing the device in question, then reloading drivers? Or updating drivers from mfg. website?
    Just a thought.

Well, kinda.... It was running as master in a master/slave pair of drives. I removed it, reassigned it as slave and the other as master. Re-installed and tested. The Acer cdrw, when I went to run a cd on it, caused the whole system to blank out. Kinda like a ghost restart. So as not to cause a major problem, I removed the unit and am assuming it to be bad. When a cd is is the drive, normally a green led indicated this. That led did not come on. The led would blink on installing a cd, then go out. I went to run and selected browse, and reply was "drive is not available ". The other drive works like a champ. Please advise. Thanks
