I have a customer that has a folder with several hundred word documents in .RTF format that have his contacts information inside. I need to find how to extract the email addresses from the documents without having to open each one. Is this possible? Or can these files be converted to some kind of contacts file in order to do this. He needs to send a flyer out and it would take countless hours to open all these(around 800) and get the addresses.

I created a file called test.rtf and inside that typed Steve@Aol.com

The windows search function was able to find the file that contained the email address. But, I had to type in the exact address.

I have a feeling you're stuck opening email doc file.

    Thanks Steve,
I one guy showing me how to merge the files, and another teaching me about using a macro. I think this might do it.

Well this didn't work as expected. A member in another forum turned me on to Email Extractor which was supposed to do the job. It would run about 4 seconds then freeze. I searched for programs like it and found Easy Email Extractor(EEX.exe). It worked perfectly with two exceptions; there is no % done or progress bar, and it doesn't stop when it's finished. It just says "wait. I waited 6 hours, checking task manager, it was using a steady 48-52% of the CPU. I finally took a chance and stopped it. It was done. I don't know how long it had been done, but I'm betting it probably finished in the first hour. In 683 documents, it found 748 email addresses.

I was off on that time estimate. I let it run for an hour and it had extracted 184 emails. Going by that, it should take roughly 3.5 hours.
