I recently installed SP 4 to a system with windows 2000 pro, SP 1.
The Search, for files and folders menu is working, however when I click on 'for files and folders' the system seems to time out and never brings up the search dialog box. The task manager will come up and after re-closing the system will return to a 'normal' state, without any search capability initializing.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix the search feature?

Are there any warning or error events recorded in your event logs?

Have you tried start~run~sfc /scannow to correct any system file problems and then a reapply of SP4? Or simply backing out SP4, making sure things are working, and then re-applying SP4?

And you should be doing the SP from a locally saved copy rather than over the internet. Not sure which way you did the first one but local copy is the only safe way to do it.

Thanks, Newt. Your advice is appreciated, and I'm going through the steps now. I installed SP4 from MS, online, and was totally unhappy with all the creative 'workarounds' that were deemed necessary to even get the update at all.

The loss of the search feature even though it's still seemingly active from the start menu is a first for me. Years of service work with windows networking and I was getting quite frustrated with the process, f'sure.

Thanks again for the advice. I'll post back within a few days, hopefully with an "All's well THANKS TO NEWT" post.

Bill - if Search is the only remaining problem after you re-do the SP, I'd suggest you get Agent Ransack and use it for searches. Much better app than the WE search piece and even though my search feature works as well as it can work, I don't remember the last time I used it.

Agent Ransack lives on my quick launch bar.

...however, your program share is now on my machine and it does work great.
