When I use the search function to find a file or folder it runs fine but it will not close upon completion of the search. Instead it keeps running until I get the following message

"Microsoft Visyual C ++ Runtime Error

    Program:C:Windows\Explorer.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual manner "

Any ideas how to fix ????

Uninstall any recently added software. Uninstall any recent updates to any software.

If that doesn't help, use System Restore to go back to a point before the problem surfaced.

Yahoo Messanger has been known to cause this and so has some of the Download Helper programs. Uninstall and test for effect if you have those.

Does it happen in Safe Mode? If not, then boot normally and use msconfig.exe or any other startups controller program to kill unneeded startups. If that works, then enable them one at a time until you isolate the culprit. It's often caused by poorly written software that is conflicting with normal well written programs and causing them to crash and get the blame.

I always run sfc /scannow for odd problems like this but I have never had it to cure one yet. :( Try it anyway - maybe you'll have better luck than I.

Perhaps nothing short of a Repair Install will fix this problem.

As an alternate, I would suggest getting the free Agent Ransack search tool. (bottom of that site page) Everyone but you is using it. :) It is far superior to the Windows search feature and works seamlessly.

Then you can ignore your problem until times get better.
