Can anyone tell me why the search in WinXP will not find the favicon files in the temporary internet files folder?

I have tried "*.ico ", "favicon ", and "favicon.ico ". I have even tried searching the TIF folder only and still no results.

A search of "*.ico" in "C" appears to find every .ico file except those in the TIF.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks

    Daniel

If your favorites still show a site-specific icon rather than the generic one, I'm not sure. Otherwise you aren't seeing them because they aren't there.

Try removing a favorite that you know has a distinctive icon, clearing your TIF cache, closing all browser windows, opening back up, navigating back to the site, adding it back as a favorite, and see if you can locate it's icon then. Probably easiest to put it as a link so you have immediate visual evidence of the icon being on your system.

I can browse to the TIF folder and open it and the icons are there.

In my old computer, I used the search in Win98se to find these favicons and it always worked. I searched for "favicon ". I would rename each one of them and drag them to my favicon folder. It was very simple and quick.

I just recently bought a new computer with WinXP and it will not find them through the search function. I can go into the TIF folder and find them and copy them to my favicon folder, but this is more work to do the same thing.

Got it. These thing are hidden much deeper on XP than on 9X systems. It also seems like the search feature of WE helps them stay that way.

Try my favorite pure search tool for 2K & XP PCs - faster and better and free. Agent Ransack.

dan239--Try searching for favicon*.ico . If you can limit the search to TIF, using the Look In line, then try that as well.

I tried your suggestion and it still did not find the icons in TIF. Thanks for trying.

I am downloading the Agent Ransack search engine. I will give it a try and let you know how it works out.

I tried the Agent Ransack search tool and like it very much. It found the icons and operates much faster than the search in WinXP.

Thanks, I really do appreciate the help I have received from the members of this site. It has helped me get settled with WinXP. I have found much of what I needed by searching past threads.

So far I am very pleased with XP and it does not have many of the small problems I had with Win98se. I have XP running much cleaner and smoother than I had expected that it would.

    Once again, thanks to everyone.

I just tried to find the favicons in my TIFs to see what would happen. I first set it to search the drive the TIFs are on and came up with nothing. I then tried searching only within the TIF folder and it found them. Strange! This is using the classic search mode. For some reason the classic search mode seems to be work better than the search assistant though still not perfect. At least that's what I've found. I've done a lot of experimenting with it and files that aren't found with the search assistant seem to show up most of the time in classic mode.

Can the search be changed to classic mode without changing everything to Classic?

Yes. You can use tweakui to set it or you can change it in the preferences to change it. I suspect the only difference between the two is the looks of the search bar. Don't know for sure because I've allways used the feature in tweakui. As I said before though, it's still not perfect. You'll be a lot happier with Agent Ransack. The only reason I really mentioned it here was because of the odd way it worked for me. The darn thing still didn't find it until I showed it the TIF folder. Seems to me MS messed up big time with the search tool in XP.

    Thanks, Zander

I think I will just use Agent Ransack since it does work like I want it to.

If you want to restore Favicons, try FavOrg

It searches your bookmarks on the net, locates the icons fresh, and locks them into your Favorites. Easier than finding them in temp files, dragging etc.

XP's search engine is dumbed down to "protect" the computer from n00bs. If you want to search hidden/system folders, you need to enable advanced options in the left pane. The search will then work as expected.

I had tried this previously and I got the same results with it as I did using the classic search bar via tweakui. If I just searched the drive the files weren't found; point it at the TIF folder on the same drive and it found them. From this, it becomes obvious to me that XP's search tool is less than reliable.

Thanks, WJim, didn't realize that it wasn't a freebie anymore. I've got it on a couple of install disks and my D drive, so I haven't been back to that link for ages. Glad to have a "heads up! "
