Search box size won't "stay"

    Hi all,

    The subject says it all — every time I click Search, the window opens to an odd size. It makes no difference what I do to resize the window, it never "remembers" it's previous size setting. The Search function works perfectly, it's just having to resize it every time I open it that's annoying.

    I've checked out Kelly's-Korner, but I only found "repairs ", which I don't need because it searches perfectly, and nothing to do with the size of the window staying. I even tweaked my Bags\BagsMRU from 8000 to 10000; no joy.

    Ideas? Fix? Reg tweak?

    It probably has a default size and maybe a registry tweak could fix it (or break the computer :)).

    I would make a shortcut to the drive or even directory/folder that you will probably be searching, then pin the shortcut to the Start Menu. When the folder opens, click on the Search button. Searching at a lower directory level will make the search quicker (and it looks like the resize sticks. Edit: No, it reverts to default).

    You say "odd size ", you may have an odd size selected for your graphics resolution.

    Mine or other default boxes I have worked on don't seem "odd ". Look at the graphics adapter resolution you have chosen. Resolution should match the screen you are using. You can look up the screen's/monitor's recommended resolution. Have you set a "square screen" resolution for a wide screen or visa-versa? Resolutions can be, for example, 1280 X 960 (4:3, square screen) or 1680 X1080 (16:10, a wide screen). Set the resolution to match the screen. The screen/monitor will have a native resolution, match it if you can.

    You might be making a tweak to fix an incorrect setting.

    I would ask why the box seems an odd size.

    Hi mattman,

    The "odd size" is for the Search Box only. Most of the bottom and the right side of the box is cut off. I have to re-size it every time and it won't "remember" it's last size\position.

    No other file, folder, or anything else is affected.

    As far as my specs go: 19" (square [18" viewable]) CRT (ViewSonic), Resolution is 800x600, the refresh rate is 100 Hertz — it's been this way since day one — 32-bit color, and the DPI is 95% (91 DPI).

    Does any of this help?

    You say you are using 800 X 600 on a 19" monitor, that would make things seem very large! Go to 1024 X 768, at least.

    You should be able to reduce the Refresh Rate. Less than 70 should be more than acceptable (100 seems to be be way too high).. See if you can notice any "flickers" on the screen if you reduce the Refresh Rate,

    We're talking a CRT monitor here.... So I would never ever run at less than 70Hz. Back in the day I used to run at 80Hz. If the monitor supports 100Hz, I would run that as refresh.

    @mattman,
    When I change the resolution to less than 800 x 600 there's a black border around the whole screen. When I adjust to monitor to compensate, 100% is the highest it'll go — and there's still the black border. Plus, with the refresh rate any less than 90 Hertz, there's a slight flicker.

    Also, I'm failing to see how the resolution or the refresh rate can cause the Search window to not remember it's size nor position.

    @Arie,
    My monitor supports up to 120 Hertz.

    Anyway, I'm still stuck on how to make the Search window remember it's size and position. Even if I maximize the window, net time I search it's back to it's odd size.

    I use a 17" CRT to run my game. It looks perfect on 1024 X 768 @ 60 Hertz, but I have pumped it up to 70 Hertz because Arie suggested it :D. When I changed the Refresh Rate, I got the black borders. When you get the black borders you need to change the settings on the monitor itself to stretch and move the viewing area.

    As I said, the box is highly likely to be governed by a default (registry) setting. I don't tweak any registry settings unless it is absolutely necessary, so sorry, I won't be able to help you there. Your display settings sound a little strange to me (maybe I'm strange :)), but things can look an odd shape (or run off the screen) at low resolution settings.
