when i should get any normal 404 message from typing ing invalid web addresses. or just incorrectly typing anything.

i get search-aid.com's 404 page which advertises different things. I get this instead of the normal windows page not found or whatever. i think this is spy ware. i cant get rid of it on adaware or spybot though.

    any ideas? thanks

p.s. the url it sends me to is www.search-aid.com/404

    thanks

Get HijackThis, and post the log on here. The link is below.

Sounds like you have been pretty well hijacked.

Can you get ad-aware, spybot, and cwshredder from the links in his sig? If so, do that then
    - on Ad-aware, install it, immediately update it, run it, and remove all the items it finds.
    - Spybot - same except you only need to remove the items it flags in red.
    - CWShredder, just get the latest version and run it.

After that you should hopefully be improved enough to get HijackThis and be able to generate a log file so we can see what remaining bad things need to go away.

If you can't get to any of the links, locate your hosts file (no extension and located differently depending on your OS) and rename it to hosts.old and try again.

If still no luck, email me (or probably markp62 would do as well) and we can attach an install copy of a couple of these to send to you. Cite this thread in the body and in the subject line, "I need spyware killers" so the mail doesn't get ignored or bounced.

i cant DL any of that.

i save target as, and it just sits there on the DL screen then pops up "cannot DL "

i already have ad-aware and spybot on my computer...but they cant get rid of this search-aid.

    (That's all the 01's)

Then download CWShredder, open and click fix with all other windows closed. Reboot and post a fresh log.

HijackThis created those backups when you removed things, just in case. After a period of time, you can delete those items.
You shouldn't need to run HijackThis on a regular basis, it is a fix tool. Spybot has an Immunize feature, which can protect you from quite a few things. The IESpyads file in my signature inserts known bad websites into the Restricted Zone of IE, preventing a lot of these places from even putting so much as a cookie on you, a method of real time protection.
Others use SpywareBlaster for a AV type real time protection.

Yes, the backups are normal. If you open HJT and click config, then backup tab you'll see the entries just removed. You can clear them all. Should post another log also.

HijackThis and CWShredder shouldn't be run on a regular basis. Spybot and Ad-Aware, in my opinion, should be run regularly. Say weekly with average internet use. Always check for updates first. I recommend you also scroll up this thread to Markp62's signature and download/install IESpyads. Oh, and I just noticed, where's your antivirus? I don't see one running. Or a firewall. Am I just overlooking them? You should not even be connected to the internet without them both! Check the pinned thread 'Welcome to S/V/S' by Dr Doom at the top of this forum for links to both or the 'Shield your PC' thread also pinned for a free one year trial of eTrust EZ Armor Antivirus/Firewall package.

    Edit
Man am I slow tonight, huh Mark?! :)

I dont think this will be nessesary, cant hurt to check,

Has the search aid ever returned ?

    Download this zip. http://www.zero.vulc4n.com/downloads/pv.zip
    unzip it to the desktop.

Double click on the runme.bat (for XP and win 2000)
    (runme9x for 9X and ME)

choose option 1 by typing 1 and enter and post the txt it creates along with a fresh hijackthis log.
Might be best to post two replys one for each.
