SeaMonkey Beta 2?

Has anyone downloaded SeaMonkey Beta 2? I use SeaMonkey 1.1.17 at the moment & it is getting a little buggy in certain Yahoo pages & Gmail. This has been noticed by quite a few people. I am thinking about downloading SM Beta 2 & I have been told that I can have both the #2 Beta & 1.1.17 on the same computer. Has anyone done this?

I am a bit hesitant as I downloaded Flock once & although it is based on the same engine (Gecko) it turned out to be a tad unstable. I finally got to see what BSOD looks like on Vista!

I doubt whether SeaMonkey 2 will end up like that as #1 seems more or less fine (apart from a few small bugs). I have been using SM since 1.1.12 & I really like it. I am not sure if I should uninstall #1 first before downloading the Beta.

Before installing SM 2.0B1, create a new Profile. If you don't, the Beta version will grab the existing Profile, which can cause corruption.

To create a separate Profile for the Beta Version:

Open SeaMonkey 1.1.17
Click on: Tools | Switch Profiles
This will give you access to the Profile Manager
Click on: Manage Profiles
Create a new Profile using a name other than "Default Profile "

Now install the Beta Version, and when the Profile Mgr. prompts for the Profile, use the newly created one.

You can also bypass the Profile Manager on each startup by follow these guidelines: How to Bypass the Profile Manager

The instructions are for Netscape, but will work for SeaMonkey.

I have not bothered installing 2.0, but I have looked at the nightlies, since day one.
I think that few people work on it, explaining why there have been years since the first alpha came out. I am using a special location for 1.1.x, so I don't have to worry about using a special location for the profile, which is located in this path: C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles
I am not sure if that is the default location for 2.0 only, or for 1.1.x.

 

OK thanks. It seems that I may be able to just uninstall 1.1.17 & install #2 beta. I will do a bit more research before I decide anything.

Well, anyway...I have downloaded SeaMonkey 2.0 beta 1 & it is fine. In fact it is more stable than the stable SeaMonkey 1.1.17 release on my computer! It imported all of my bookmarks etc perfectly & I don't have any problems with loading in some Yahoo! pages as I did in SM 1.1.17. I have no plans to go back to 1.1.17.

 

seamonkey is a fine browser,especially for a machine low on resources. I have it installed,but use it as a backup to its big brother,Firefox. It certainly beats out IE8.

 

That's how I started out. I thought it would be a good back-up to Firefox if I had any problems with it. I had some problems with the Fx #2 to Fx#3 upgrade. Predominantly because of incompatibilities with the Google toolbar. Now Firefox is a back-up to SeaMonkey!

 

I'm glad things worked out for you. Always seek and apply the best software to your machine. Sometimes what works for one may not for another.Good luck!

 

Cheers, I am not always sure about betas but a lot of them are quite good & stable. I haven't tried the Opera 10 beta yet & I can wait for the final release. I have had virtually no problems with SeaMonkey 2.0 beta 1 (1 crash in Yahoo so far) & it is far more reliable than SM 1.1.17 which was becoming unusable on my computer.

In fact it is more reliable than Safari's 4.0, 4.0.1 & 4.0.2 which would freeze & crash regularly until the 4.0.3 release!
