I've got a new computer [hot stuff - some gamer had to sell cheap!] and since I'm customizing it, I had planned to download Seamonkey 1.1 and try it out. Firefox is installed on this machine already, but I've got Firefox installed on my old computer along with SeaMonkey and never had any problems.

I downloaded the Seamonkey 1.1 install, but when I tried to run it, I got an error very early in the process: Netscape 5. I find absolutely no evidence that Netscape was ever installed on this machine, and searching on "Netscape" I find only one reference to it -in the Windows/Microsoft.NET folder, as one of many .browser files.

I don't find anything in the SeaMonkey FAQs or in Bugzilla. Any bright ideas??

Not sure what you did, probably, because downloading, and installing are two different things. What do you mean by I got an error very early in the process: Netscape 5?
Not knowing what about Netscape 5, I could give you some background, and a guess. You, probably, use WinXP, and it is possible that some program had been installed in the past. There was never a Netscape 5, but Windows calls 5.0 any program which came out after 4.x. More precisely: UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1. That includes Netscape 6, 7, Mozilla, Firefox, you name it.
It is not possible for Seamonkey1.1 to use the Firefox profile, but it is possible to use an old Netscape 6 or 7 profile, and there may be incompatibility. Take a look at:profile info . If nothing else check the location of the profile, to see if there is a default profile, with more than bare bones info.

    bentley,

This was in the Mozilla Release Notes a few versions back. As SeaMonkey is based on Mozilla, could this be your
    Error 5 solution?

    Error 5 or Netscape 5?
I know what the first is, but what is the association to "Netscape5 "?

Sorry - I was doing about six things simultaneously when I posted this and never got back to this computer. And the question was completely wrong.

The download opens, you go through the various options of how you want it to install, it configures GRE and then starts the install. It gets to "Currently installing Navigator" and "Copying file: Seamonkey.exe []" and pops up with the error message "Error occurred during installation - Navigator: 5 ".

    Can anybody help now?

    bentley,

I've found next to nothing on this obscure error. I agree with Westside, that another Gecko browser was installed at one time.

Before trying to install SeaMonkey again, do this:

Look for a GRE folder here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE

If there is a GRE folder, then delete the folder, and in fact you can also delete the mozilla.org folder.

Now go here, and delete the SeaMonkey folder:
    C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey

    Most importantly, reboot your system.

Now see if SeaMonkey will install.

...unless there is another Mozilla/Netscape program, still in use. My GRE folder has two folders. One is the 1.7.2..... used by Netscape 7.2. The other one is 1.8.0.9.... And, I have 1.0.7 and 1.1 installed. What is being used by 1.1, and where is it?
