Our computer is acting badly again...ever since my husband "lost" the toolbar the other day, it seems things are different. The toolbar is back, but the icons are all lined up in a box, the start menu items are smaller, and the scrolling and typing isn't catching up very fast at all. Right now I can't see one thing I'm typing...just the cursor going across the page very slowly, one space at a time...then if I let it sit, it will catch up a few words at a time. Scrolling is jumpy at best. I have tried defragmenting, restarting, checking Internet Options, and checking the Keyboard & cursor options under the control panel. Any suggestions? Is our little darling just overloaded? Thanks in advance for any ideas! Windows 98, HP Pavilion 6333 AMD K-6-2/300, 64 RAM, 32 ROM, 6GB.Still nothing visible as I type!

    Hi, Barb ~

    32 ROM??

I don't know all the apps you have loaded on your unit and/or what you have running in background as far as unnecessary processes/programs, but the first thing that catches my eye is your 64MB RAM - overloaded it may well be! Assuming you have current-day apps, 256MB would be necessary to run most at a pace that is reasonable and 128MB at absolute minimum - IMHO. :)

    Hi Barb

I wonder if your little darling is suffering from lack of hard drive space - 6 gig is microscopic these days :D How much free space have you?

Suggest you get rid of all the Temporary Internet files.

In IE Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files on General Tab > Delete

Then go to Windows > Temp and clear out all the *.tmp files. As i recall 98 was notorious for holding on to these.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bruce that 64 Mb of RAM is marginal, even for 98, but I guess the sweet thing has been running OK, albeit slowly, prior to this.

    I assume the answer to Bruce's query is 32 x CD-ROM drive

Add to the above list of file clearances - Recycle Bin

Scrolling & Typing Delays in IE

Really getting frustrated now! Am posting this at work 'cause I can't stand to deal with teh "ghost" typing at home when trying to enter info. onto a BBS or internet window! Have tried the fixes listed in another post (Roadrunner - 2002), and these given to my post earlier, along with a fix suggested on the Windows Update site... even messed with the registry, as directed, to no avail. I then decided to try to download IE6, figuring a new IE would maybe solve the problem...NOT! I have done all I can think of, along with all the BBS suggestions...NEED HELP BAD before I throw computer out the window! Thanks in advance! Windows 98, HP Pavilion 6333, AMD K-6 Processor, 32x, 64mb, now running IE6/OE6.

    Barb,

Is this problem confined to IE ?

Even if it is not one suggestion is to remove the mouse and keyboard via Device Manager, reboot and let Windows find them again.

Any chance of substituting another mouse/keyboard temporarily?

Doubtful - especially as I am typing this with scroll lock on ! - and I can still scroll normally (?) - I have a MS Internet keyboard which may have something to do with it (?) or maybe the mouse with the scroll button.

Just caught a point on a re-read of your first post -
Try View > Text Size and try setting it to something larger

Right click on a blank are of the tool bar and see if Lock Tool Bar is checked - if it is uncheck it and go to View > Toolbars > Customise and select large icons.

My guess is that IE 6 inherited the settings of the previous version.

A last resort - this problem may be Windows related - re-install Windows 98 over the top of the existing installation.

Put the Win CD into the machine - kill the welcome screen and go to Windows Explorer, open up the CD and double click on setup.exe.

It's been a while since I used 98, but I recall that a re-install this way left most, if not all of your settings unchanged.

Usual rider - at your own risk :)

Been there, done that...didn't work. How do I reinstall Windows 98 without a CD (from hard drive)? If I type too fast here, it locks up, gives me a low system resources message and I have to restart to unlock.Only in IE, no problem in OE or Works. Continued thanks!

    Barb

No installation CD is bad news - I've looked at my other m/c which has triple boot to XP. Me and 98SE and can find no way of re-installing 98SE from the hard drive - unless others know better.

Suggest you beg, borrow or steal a Win 98 CD from family, friends, neighbours, whoever. No guarantee that it will load over the existing copy as version nos. may be different. You would have the opportunity to reformat, but I guess you probably don't have a CR-RW to back up your data to - always floppies - lots of them! (and Winzip will bridge multiple floppies)

At a loss as to what else to suggest.
