    Hello,

I have a dell laptop with windows vista and for a while now I've been having a problem with scrolling. It used to be whenever I opened a web page on google chrome it would scroll I the bottom of the screen and now it has spread to the rest of the programs like word.

I have tried using a mouse and turning off the keypad, I have tried checking the buttons, I have checked my drivers, installed updates, defragged my disks, ran a virus scan, did a system restore, and I tried to manually check my c drive which is a reccomendation that has been popping up for a while. I am literally running out of things to do to try to fix it.

Another side note is that whenever my computer is restarted it says that my ntsf drive needs to be checked, but instead of doin it it says that it has been cancelled every time, even though I didn't push anything for it to be canceled.

    Hope you can help,
    Amanda

Hi and welcome to the WindowsBBS community.

Offhand, I would not see much correlation between the problems, but not something strange (very and very, very strange) as I have seen before :D.

Try setting Error Checking to run yourself. Search for the term Error Checking in Help and Support. Run the scan on the C: (Windows) drive. Put a check in the box "Scan for and attempt to recover... ". It might take several hours, so set it to run overnight. It will "ask" to be set to run when the computer restarts. So be ready to restart and allow it to run.

What exactly is the scrolling problem, does it "jump ", go immediately to the bottom of the window, not allow you to select text, not allow you to look through text you have typed, etc, etc?

It could be due to a malware infection, I can't see much correlation between a browser (Chrome) and it migrating to a word processor, unless it be drivers.

Try another mouse or using the touchpad.

PS: Scolling...I always use the up and down arrows for scrolling or I "grab" the scroll bar and drag it. I don't click on a blank space in the scroll bar column. That stopped working for me a long time ago (long, long time ago :)).

    Thank you for your help!

The page usually jumps to the bottom of the screen.

I've already tried to use a different mouse and tried the touchpad and it doesn't work.

Also, while checking my disk for errors it says that it cannot check a drive in use and to have it check upon restart, except when I do that it cancels itself.

Let me know if you might have another suggestion!

I have seen "jumps to the bottom of the screen" at work, running Windows XP Pro. If it the same problem that I am thinking of.

I didn't have much time to look into it (not my job) and the users didn't keep asking me if it could fixed.

If it is the same problem I am thinking of, it might be fixed by updates (but as I was saying, I didn't know that someone actually did the repair). Check your settings for Windows Updates. Don't get Optional updates installed automatically, check what they refer to and see if you get them from the original equipment manufacturer. Update all the ones listed as Important.

Get updates for your programs, the one I would consider the most important is for Java. Look in Control Panel for Java (switch to Control Panel "classic view" in the left pane, if you are not using it). If Java doesn't appear in the Control Panel list, don't worry, just get whatever Important Windows Updates you can.
