When I used the scroll wheel on my mouse the screen used to scroll smooth and without any jumping and it was fast. Now it is jumpy and after I stop it continues to scroll. I must have changed a setting someware but I have spent the last couple of hours looking for it. I know I have way too much time on my hands but I am retired after 32 years with one company. AT&T.

The settings are found in Control Panel > Mouse.

I think that's odd that you should post this problem - I've been noticing much the same problem with my wheel mouse lately. I hope it isn't one of the last batch of HotFixes. I'll have to watch closely and see what gives.

Did you install that last batch of HotFixes, about 8 of them, all at once, I think?

Let me know if the setting change you make cures the ailment.

If you haven't dumped the $Uninstall$ files, you can go to Add/Remove Programs and get rid of the updates to see if it restores your wheel mouse back to normal. Maybe do them one at a time and check for effect, since you're retired and have lots of patience. :D

Edit: I just checked, I got 8 HotFixes on 2/9. That would be the place to start.

Here's the cronological list of those 8

Actually, that's all of my HotFixes from SP2 till now.

Checked on mine also, batteries in good shape also. I have observed something and it is that it completely re-writes the screen is small increments. It never did that before, it would scroll with out re-writing, this is what is giving the jerky image as the scroll progress. When I click on the scroll bar for a page it re-writes several times until it gets to a new page, when I click on the arrows it re-writes 4 or 5 times is very small increments then waits for my next command.

Obviously something has affected your video system. Possible video memory allocation or driver corruption. You might try updating the driver just for exercise.

I check the video settings and all are correct. Previously when I would click and drag the thumb the screen would move in real time and not flash or re-write but now it re-writes and does not glide smoothly.

Hmmm..my symptoms are somewhat different than yours. As usual I get something that defies description. I can only describe it as, the mouse action gets squirrely on occasion. Sometimes using the wheel causes the screen to scroll all over the place even after I stop doing anything. I haven't been able to define the trigger as yet. I just know that it isn't like it was before the 2/9 HotFixes. Nothing serious since it's intermittent so I'll just wait until you find out what the cause is and use that to fix mine. :)

    Maybe reinstall your mouse driver.

I'll keep you posted if I find out any further.

Did you check to see that the video acceleration setting didn't somehow get changed. From the description of your problem it sounds like it's a possibility. Right click on the desktop, properties>settings>advanced>troubleshoot. You might try running dxdiag to and see if it shows any problems. Start>run and type dxdiag.

Video acceleration is running and there are no problems shown in dxdiag. Thanks for the shot. I have as yet to unload each of the latest upgrades. More time this week.

I restored prior to the updates and still have the same problem. I have those updates on my laptop and the wife's pc and they don't have the problem. I looked for the updates in add/remove programs but they are not there but the history shows them installed and Windows Update does not try to reload them. Sure is baffling!

I'm never that confident that the System Restore is all that effective at uninstalling components. I'd recommend a full use of the uninstall tool supplied with the program. In this case you can either run it from Windows Add/Remove or else go directly to the folder listed in Windows ( those $uninstall$ folders) and you'll see the uninstall.exe within each one.

I hope it still work since you did the roll back.

As to your other concern, there is no accounting for how Hotfixes may impact (impair) any given system. Then again, we may be chasing a wild goose. ;)

    Regards.

Just a note of clarification. After the restore to prior to the updates I made sure they were not installed and my system was asking to install them, I did not. I found the the same problem existed without the updates. At that point I undid the restore and am now back with the updates installed.

Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like our goose is cooked. Back to square one and pursuing the video drivers maybe. Like I said, mine isn't so bad that I can't live with it.

I'm not letting the HotFix possibility get off scot free yet. Sometimes they do damage on the way in that isn't corrected on the way out. :) I guess the best thing to do in that regard is to do a Google ever now and then to see if others have been affected likewise.
