I got a new mouse, Optical mouse PS2 style. I started to have this problem mostly when in IE6. I am running XP SP2 fully patched.

If i use the scroll wheel in IE6 it will scroll the page just fine, the problem comes if i scroll up when it gets to the top of the page it seem like the wheel then causes a page refresh or sometime, it will cause IE6 to go to the perv page, like i had hit the back button in the toolbar. The only thing i have done is scroll up with the wheel yet more seem to happen.

I have also noticed in file explorer if i am viewing a directory with more then one page of files and i am near the bottom of the list, if i then try and scroll up the page scrolls up but then quickly jumps back to the same location near the bottom of the page with the original file highlited.

I got the new mouse from walmarts, it is a microinv.com optical mouse. It did not come with any driver and none are at the web site.

I have tried all the settings in control panel Mouse and also in TweakUI. It seems to not be as much of a problem if i set it to scroll one line at a time instead of one page.

I am starting to think the mouse is junk and i will need to get a new one again to fix this strange behaviour. I use the wheel all the time and it is driveing me nuts.

Anybody else have this problem or using the cheap walmarts mouse.

Well, i have solved this it looks like.

I put the old mouse back and still had the problems.
I then deleted the mouse in device manager, and then did not restart.
I then uninstall the device and did restart.
It then plug and played and requested a restart, i restarted and it worked good.
I then replaced the mouse and it is still working good.

Not sure why i had the proble in the forst place but it is OK now.

    Hi Rainey,

Well done. The new mouse may have been using drivers for the old mouse (if they happened to be different...?...well, I suppose they were :)). Specialized drivers can be installed for some mice (example...running any "non-standard" buttons for a mouse will need specialized drivers).

Thanks for letting us know how you solved it.

    Matt
