When I use the scroll button on the mouse the movement is wavy instead of natural. Nothing unusual to contribute to the problem that I am aware of. Worked fine this morning. Went off for a few hours and when I restarted the computer the scroll started being wavy. Of course the kids were here but they never do anything....

I checked the mouse in the Control Panel but all is normal there. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you got another mouse to try?

Check in Internet Explorer to see if smooth scrolling is enabled. Tools>internet options>advanced. It's the last one under browsing (use smooth scrolling). I don't know if this is a system wide setting or not but knowing how IE is tied to windows I wouldn't doubt it. If that's set ok, you might try unchecking it, reboot and recheck it. If no joy there; do you have TweakUI? If so, open it and click on Explorer. Look in the list for a line that says "enable smooth scrolling ". If you don't have TweakUI you can get it here.

Sometimes updating the video driver does the trick for this type of thing but it seems unlikely in this case if it worked ok before. It's possible though that they got messed up a bit somehow and it might not hurt to try reinstalling them or updating them.

    How about system restore?

Fixed. I didn't have another scroll mouse to try so that option was unavailable. Smooth scrolling was checked so I unchecked, rebooted, rechecked, rebooted, but problem remained.

Restored from a restore point and things are back to normal. I don't like using system restore because on more than one occasion things did not go well. But this time I got lucky.

I did noticed that I updated from Windows Update KB840374. I restored a day earlier than this install. I didn't have this problem until I installed this update. I seem to unconsciencely disassociate problems with Windows Update, never thinking an update could be the cause of a problem, and I'm not saying it is so in this case but I think I'd better read more about updates from now on before installing.

Anyway thanks all, I'm smiling again. :)
