I have been using XP professional now for about 6 months but recently I'll walk away from pc and return some time later to find the screensaver (10 minutes) and /or power saver on monitor (1 hour) hasn't activated.
Seems to be random, sometimes works and sometimes not.
Can't seem to find a common thread to when it works and when it doesn't.

Anyone had this, any clues ???

    Cheers

I don't have an answer for you, but I can tell you I have been running XP Pro for almost 2 years, and occasionally the same thing happens on my system. Then I will use the comp again, go away, and the screensaver is back when I return. Have no clue why, and yes, it does seem to be random.

Good try, Pete, C, but neither of those conditions apply in my case. Just "one of those things "! If XP had no quirks, life might get boring!!

    PS
Been following the thread on your reinstall. Think I have a similar problem, except no BSOD, and tried Mike's advice, too. Hasn't frozen yet... ;) we'll see what happens!

Here's a shot in the dark... check the properties of your network adapter in the 'device manager'. On the 'power management' tab make sure 'Allow this device to bring the computer out of stand by' is not checked. (yeah I know it's farfetched, but you never know  )

    Hmm Maybe

Well, I thought you might have had it as being the power management on the network adapter but alas, it wasn't checked..

Ahh well, back to the drawing board, and yes it does sound very much like you describe, nothing perfect I guess.

    Cheers and thanks all.
