Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have Dell Optiplex GX 110 desktop that is probably about 4 years old. The operating system is Windows 98. I have Internet Explorer Version 6.0 for my browser.Within the last couple of months, while cruising the internet, my screen freezes up a lot and I end up having to restart constantly. Sometimes the mouse cursor freezes and I will occasionally get a message upon restart that the computer can't locate the mouse. I have unplugged and replugged the mouse a lot. Also, sometimes, the screen will go crazy and windows will open up all over the screen, seeming to pop up from wherever the cursor is pointing. I have done the defrag, disk cleanup, disk scan for errors and even used spybot regularly but still the problem persists. Any ideas would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

The other day I had very similar problems (and the mouse not detected at startup). The Intellipoint scroll mouse had finally stopped working properly. I kept getting more and more errors with it.

    Try another mouse.

    Matt,
Thanks so much for the advice. It's usually the most obvious answer that works, isn't it? I bought a new mouse and all seems fine. Thank you so much for replying.

Glad it seemed to work. Actually, when mine started playing up, it was during internet sessions like yours.

Thanks for replying, it may help someone else.

For anyone who reads this post, with a similar problem and a new mouse doesnt work, it is likely to be adware/spyware or a virus. Adware has a tendency to hog so many resources when you are online (when it is most active) it can freeze PCs or slows them down so much the mouse movement is jerky.

So scan for viruses using your antivirus and also scan for adware using a good adware remover like Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-aware. They are free for download.
