Every day for the past couple weeks when I start my computer, it comes up at 640 x 480 screen area.

I have to right click on desktop, then: properties/settings/screen area/click on slide bar to move it over to 1024 x 768 which will not "take" (but I have to to it this way every time). Then I have to restart the computer and go through that again and it does take to the desired setting. It asks if I want to save the new setting, I click "ok ", and then it's fine till next time I start the computer.

    How come that happens?

Thanks very much. I will check back frequently hoping for some help on fixing the problem.

Is your video card newly installed, or that problem just started all of sudden?
While at 640x480, go start --> settings --> control panel --> display --> settings, and see, if there are only 16 colors listed. That would mean a driver problem with your video card.
Did you try to get a new driver for your card?
If you have a Compaq computer, try original Compaq driver.
Go to msconfig and click the advanced button and be sure "VGA 640 x 480 x 16" is NOT checked.
You have an irq conflict with the video card (go into device manager and look for yellow ! marks)
Go start --> settings --> control panel --> system --> device manager --> display adapters
remove all i items under here and restart the computer. it should pick up your display adpater on startup and you can reinstall.
    ...just few things to try...

It turns out that the solution was to have the monitor powered on whenever I start my computer.

I always turn off the monitor and CPU when I'm done with a session. I guess sometimes I would not turn on the monitor right away when I powered up the computer and that's when I'd have my problem with screen size.
