    Hi All,
Thanks to PeteC my modem problem is solved and is loading web pages faster then I could imagine. I spend 3 hours on line and I only got kicked off once. I probably spend to much time on one web page and the computer interpreted this as inactivity and kicked me off.

What remains is my scanner and sound problem, and I think they are related somehow.

When I boot up with my scanner on, I get a sound icon and sound, along with the USB icon for my scanner, when I boot with the scanner off, I get no icon and no sound. I have tried this several times and the result is the same.

System Info: Win XP, AMD 2000+, Scanner =HP scanjet 5p,
Sound = Realtek AC97 integrated on motherboard.

    Any Ideas?

    Sven

    Hi Sven,

Are you using HP's drivers or XP's? Have you seen this from HP? If you completely uninstall and unhook the scanner does your sound work? Have you checked compatability of the SCSI card?

    Hi noahdfear,

I used workaround # 2 and the scanner works fine.
    ( using XP drivers)
I can also scan from CompuPic and MS Photo Editor.
The scanner does not use a SCSI card, but a SCSI-USB cable.
I will try and unplug the scanner and boot to see if that
    Changes anything.
    Thanks
    Sven

    Hi All

Today, before I booted up, in unplugged my scanner from the usb port and to my surprise, I got a sound icon and sound.

So something is interfering with the sound when the scanner is plugged in.

After I plug the scanner in again the same problem as before, no sound on the first boot.

    Any ideas?

Hi Sven: I'm not sure this is germaine, but I had a somewhat similar problem with an HP2200C scanner, somewhat more severe. After installing the scanner and plugging it in, the scanner worked as advertised. Then I shutdown. On the next boot, with the scanner plugged in my machine would not boot. Unplug the scanner, machine booted, no problem. Plug in scanner after boot, scanner works fine, but machine will not boot with it plugged in.

Suggestion from this board was to plug into a differend USB port. I tried that by plugging into a hub. Same problem. Then I plugged it in to the motherboard USB port on the back of the machine, problem cured, machine booted fine.

Two days ago, I installed an HP USB printer. (seems parellel port printers are passe.) Instructions say don't use hub. Unplug scanner from back of machine, plug in printer. Printer works, but now scanner unplugged. Figured what the heck I'll plug scanner in hub, see what happens.

Plugged scanner into hub. No problem. Right where machine would not previously boot, boots fine, scanner works, printer works, how about that?:D

I don't know if this is any help, but you could experiment with whatever USB ports you have available and for sure, if you can, plug direct to MOBO. Not front USB ports, they seem to act just like a hub.

    Hi Martin,
    Thanks for the tip.
I tried all usb ports that I have except for going direct to the MB.

    The result is the same.
I guess I have to stick with my old routine of booting twice to get it going.

    Thanks again

    Sven,

I'm using my old HP Scanjet 5p with XP computer. Instead of buying a SCSI/USB interface cable, I bought a SCSI/PCI card that plugs into PCI slot. After getting correct drivers, I've not had any problems.

    BTW - I bought scsi/pci card off eBay for $9.00 + s/h.

Thought I would let you know this just in case.

    Coboller.

Can you tell me, what scsi Card did you buy?

Please give exact model and make, because I know that not all cards will work with xp or the scanner.
    Regards
    Sven

    SVEN,

Happy to help. The card is an Adaptec 50-pin SCSI PCI Adapter AHA-2940. There are quite a few listed on eBay - from about $7.00 and up. I also downloaded file sj673en.exe from driverguide.com. This will install PrecisionPro.scan. The file is large (50mb). If you don't have high-speed connection, maybe someone else can download it and burn a copy for you. If you have never been to driverguide.com before, you will have to register, but that process is simple.

    Good luck,

    Ed / AKA coboller

    Hi Coboller

I bet on a SCSI card on ebay.
    Lets see what happens.

I could not find the file sj673en.exe anywhere
    on driverguide.com They have sj685en.exe.
I also tried searching with PrecisionPro.scan
    No luck.

Can you make a copy of that file and mail me a copy?
I mail you a check for what ever you have to pay in postage.

    Regards
    Sven

Oops...I mis-read your post. I thought you were offering to pay for the file.
