I'm using Vista Business edition and my scanner is a Canon 8600F that is accessed via the Canoscan Toolbox software. Whenever I reboot the computer, the toolbox cannot access the scanner and an error message indicates that the TWAIN driver is not installed.

To get the scanner working, I must first uninstall it in Device Manager>Imaging Devices, disconnect the USB cable from the scanner, reboot the computer and then run the Canon driver installation file. An icon appears in the Taskbar tray and then the scanner can be successfully accessed by the Toolbox after I reconnect its USB cable.

However, whenever I reboot the computer, I seem to lose the driver and the scanner can no longer be accessed. The same error report about the missing TWAIN driver appears again.

How can I keep the Canon driver installed permanently and eliminate the need to reinstall it each time the computer is rebooted? I have contacted Cannon's technical support but they cannot resolve this problem as it's apparently related to the OS.

Hi bobengel, I know exactly what you are going through, I have had the exact same problem with my Canon 8000 when I first started using it. Now of course that does not mean that my fix will solve your problem, I also have a Canon Printer and I have found that Canon's are very fussy when it comes to driver installation.
In my case it was all USB related, I was and still am using a PCI USB card and the chip on the card had to be a NEC chip I had spent over a month before I got the answer from the USB Man I searched every Forum and Canon Support was no help.Do not run your Scanner from a USB Hub, on my other system AMD socket 939 running Vista Ultimate I have experienced a different problem.
But still with Canon Scanner dumping the Twain Driver.
This again was USB related and I had posted here on the BBS in this case it was a IRQ conflict and I moved the PCI 1 to No.7 in the BIOS und that fixed the problem instantly and it has not missed a beat since. You are also using Vista.
USB has been my problem with the Canon.
Let us know how you are going please.

Thanks for the tip but I can't seem to find any BIOS setting that will permit me to change "PCI 1 to 7 ". Can you give me some guidance on that? Which BIOS setting controls this?

It would be looking different in your BIOS as you would have a different Motherboard than I have.
I am using a Gigabyte Motherboard with Award BIOS.
This might help a bit as most Award BIOS have some similarities, in my case it is in: PnP/PCI Configurations
PCI 1 IRQ Assignment [Auto] change to:
PCI 1 IRQ Assignment change manually to IRQ7.
Like I said this worked for me not to say it will for for you, but I think worth a try.
Have you tried different USB ports and make sure you are not using a USB Hub. Also follow Canons driver Installation to the Letter.
Please keep us up to date on how you are going.

I'm using an Asus MB with Phoenix bios which is why I can't find the USB change adjustments you suggested but I will look again more carefully in the menu. I don't use a USB hub and the Canon driver installation file is simply an .exe file with no options. I just click it and it installs.

I do have an internal PCI card that has USB ports that I may try installing to see if it solves the problem as it will replace the MB's USB ports.

I'll post the results. Thanks for responding.

    Bob
