    Scandisk does not run like it once did at startup when Windows has been shutdown improperly or after a power failure. How can I reinstall this valuable scandisk routine? I do not want to run scandisk everytime I startup, only in these situations.

    This can happen if scandisk is corrupt or the version you have does not match the date of your system.

    If you have any scandisk.exe files in the root directory, rename it (them) to scandisk.old.

    Check the date on the scandisk.exe in the Windows/Command folder. Verify that the date of the Scandisk.exe file located in the Windows\Command folder matches the system date of your version of Microsoft Windows 98 (May 11, 1998 for Windows 98 or April 23, 1999 for Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition).

    If the date is incorrect, use the System File Checker Tool to extract the correct version from your CD.

    just a thought, but you haven't disabled
    it in msconfig.
    Start>Run>
    type in-- msconfig---then press enter
    under the General tab click Advanced
    and ensure that there isn't a check mark
    beside "disable Scandisk after bad shutdown "

    In addition to the other good advice already given, open your msdos.sys file in Notepad (on the C:\ root) and verify that it has the correct setting for Scandisk usage:

    AutoScan=0 (Scandisk is Disabled )
    AutoScan=1 (Scandisk Prompts First)
    AutoScan=2 (Scandisk Runs Automatically)

    Changes will take place on the next reboot.

    I'd say you need AutoScan=2

    If you need to change it, you'll need to remove the Read Only attribute prior to making the change, then reset it afterwards.

    :)

    Also look for a file SCANDISK.ALT and delete it.

    I THINK it is in the Windows system folder. Or it may be in C:\Windows\Command folder.

    I just plain forgot where it was.
