When I run a thorough ScanDisk, sometimes it tells me that "X" bytes of data in "N" lost file fragments have been found. It asks me if I want to Discard lost file fragments and recover disk space, Convert the lost file fragments into files, or Ignore this error and continue. Is there any way to view what is in these fragments before I make this decision. I don't want to clutter my hard drive with garbage, yet I don't want to delete something that may be important. Any suggestions?

Whenever your PC hangs or you do a ctl-alt-del of an app or do a forced shutdown, any files that are in the process of being created or being updated, will be left as lost file fragments.

If you were not in the process of updating or creating a file that you absolutely need to try and recover, just allow scandisk to delete the fragments.

Note: When you run scandisk, run with autofix off. There should be few if any file fragments when you scan. IF scandisk finds an excessive number, be suspicious that something is wrong, and do not delete them until you have investigated more. On a failing drive or corrupted directory, scandisk can "think" that everything is a lost file fragment, when it really isn't.

    Hello experts,

After doing a reset I used to get a blue screen with a bar filling up with yellow blocks and then the startup of Win98SE followed.
However this step in-between has gone now.
Can it be restored somehow ?

That only will happen when you shut your computer down incorrectly. If you shut it down correctly (click Start button, then Shut Down), you won't have to go through ScanDisk. When you want to run ScanDisk, try Programs - Accessories - System Tools - ScanDisk. Run maintenance Wizard after shutting down all running programs (including startup), and you can run ScanDisk and Defrag your drive also.

It could also be happening when you have downloaded updates or new programs onto your drive. Then, it is just letting you know the progress of the installation. It only comes up with large downloads. Do't worry if you don't see it all the time.

    Hi Barry,

So, doing a reset does not imply "shutting down incorrectly ".

However, I am pretty sure that I got that bar filling up with yellow blocks after each reset until a few days ago.

Mayve "scandisk" is not the right word for the happening mentioned.
