HELP! I am a computer idiot but I need help. My computer is slow, the screen freezes ect. my computer gives me a msg says run scandisk for windows. I did this but I get this message (scandisk has restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive. quitting some running programs may enable scandisk to finish sooner) IT NEVER FINISHES! I dont have anything else running or up while doing this scan. ALSO, I tried to defragment. It wont do it. it shows me that it is defragmenting but it stays at 0% and never moves for days finally my computer just shuts off. I purchased this registry cleaner program? I ran it it said I had 256 errors found. I ran it and now it shows 0 errors. but my computer still does the same problems. HELP ME PLeeeeeeeeeeeeease! :(

    Kelly,

Try starting your computer in safe mode. You may have programs running the background of your computer that you don't even know are there (ie: viruses, adware, spryware, malware, etc.). In safe mode, MOST of your drivers, start-up items, etc. are automatically disabled, therefore there shouldn't be much of any interference that can lead to scandisk and defragmenting problems. The downfall of running defrag and scandisk in Safe Mode, however, is that very few controller and chipset drivers are loaded, causing it to take a much longer time to scan your disk and defrag your system.

I would try the following steps:

Press the F8 key (may need to tap it a few times) when your computer is starting up (BEFORE you see Windows 2000 loading). This will show you your Windows boot menu options. Choose "Safe Mode" - there may be a few others with extras on them, just pick the one called Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode, run your scandisk program. This may take a long time depending on how large your hard drive is, and how many errors it needs to correct. Then run your disk defrag program. Once again, this may take a while to do.

After you successfully scan disk and defrag, restart your computer in normal mode. If you're still having problems, try visiting trendmicro.com and run their new FREE online virus/threat scan. This may take a while as well, depending on the size of your hard drive, files contained, etc.

I would also recommend downloading Adaware SE (free) from www.lavasoft.de

It's free for private, home use, and can eliminate a lot of spyware and other related threats that could be causing your computer to ***** up on ya.

    Hope this helps!
