Hi
When i press scan to email on my epson 4490 it goes through all the steps but won't open outlook express,i have done everything epson has told me to do(uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled everything again in safe mode reinstalled new software from their site still nothing!)i then installed the original software on to my wifes 4 year old computer and it worked ok, so it isn't the scanner,at this point epson suggested i contacted Dell saying it must be my O/S thats at fault, i have a Dell Dimmension 9200 less than 12 months old running xp sp2. sorry to be long winded thought all the info might help.

Regards Tony G

Hi, Tony G. :)
Since you forgot to specifically mention you made sure OE is set as your default email client, TonyT's suggestion was valid. We'll keep in mind our suggestions might have already been tried by you...but we'll keep suggesting things as we think of them while probing for more details at the same time. :)

I will also post links (as I think of them) for handy reference in case someone wants to access the info.

According to the scanner's specifications,
Please do the following.
1. While holding down your Windows key (in the bottom row of the keyboard), press the Pause/Break key (top row near the numeric keypad).
(This will bring up your "System Properties" window.)
2. Click the Hardware tab > Device Manager

Are there any errors shown in Device manager (question marks/exclamation points), especially errors related to "Imaging devices" and "Universal Serial Bus controllers "?
(Click on the "+" at the beginning of each line to expand each section.)

In the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section, is there a "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" listed?

=====

When you try to scan to email, are you presented with any error messages? If so, please post the error message(s) with exact wording/spelling, including error number (if shown).

What other USB interface devices are connected to your computer?

Did your problem scanner function properly with your Dell Dimension 9200 at some time before this problem started occurring (or is this a brand new, never-used-before-with-your-Dell-Dimension-9200 scanner)?

If the scanner used to function properly with your Dell Dimension 9200, then can you recall any software and/or hardware changes you may have made immediately prior to time the problem first occurred?

Can you perform other functions of your scanner (such as copying to printer) with your Dell Dimension 9200?

Please forgive me for asking so many questions in one post. Generally, the more information we have to start with, the sooner we can arrive at a solution.

Hi Mailman

Sorry if I appeared sharp with my reply to Tony it was'nt meant that way.
Checked the device manager and their appears to be no problems,I have 2 enhanced host controllers and 5 universal host controller.
The scanner is brand new and has never scanned to email on my computer but it does everything else.
Other usb devices are printer, card reader,AverTv dbt. The message i get is
AN ERROR OCURRED WHILE STARTING THE EMAIL APPLICATION.

No problem about the tone of the message. :) We understand people can sometimes be frustrated too.

Thanks for your additional details. :)
Don't ya just love error messages like that? They tell ya something is wrong but not much more than that.

Perhaps Event Viewer will provide more specific information about that error.

=========

Instructions About How to Access and Use "Event Viewer ":

• Click Start.
• Right-click My Computer.
• Select "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window.
(Event Viewer will be displayed under the "System Tools" directory item.)
• Expand "Event Viewer" and then select "Application ", "Security ", and "System" to view the logs.
• Look for "error" events that occurred around the time your problem occurred. These events will be displayed as icons with either a white X on red background or a black exclamation point on yellow background. In the security section of Event Viewer, events of possible concern are ones that display a padlock icon instead of a key icon.
• Double-click on an individual event to open the "Event Properties" window which shows details about the event.
• You can use the up/down arrow buttons in the "Event Properties" window to move your focus to other events in the list.
• Use the button below the up/down arrows to copy the details for an event to your clipboard for pasting elsewhere.
• Click on the "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp" link in the "Event Properties" window to view more information from Microsoft about the event.

Alternatively, Event Viewer may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.

The epson scanner should have its own proprietary software and twain client. Perhaps there's a setting in the epson preferences where you can setup/select your default mail client. There may even be a control panel applet for these settings in Scanners & Faxes.

It is also possible that your antivirus or other security application prevents direct access to composing email messages.

Thanks for your updates, Tony G. :)

Perhaps you can compare settings between your wife's computer and your problem computer and find a discrepancy.

Since it appears your USB interface is properly functioning and you ruled out your anti-virus (and assuming you don't have any other "memory-resident" security software installed), so far it seems there is a scanner setting somewhere that is or is not enabled (or we have a configuration issue in Outlook Express or Windows XP).

I know you have probably already been through "all of this" before but I expect that was done over the phone and it's possible the rep you spoke with missed something. It might be helpful to review those instructions in print.

Please review the following scanner User's Guide information sources to confirm you have the proper settings for your problem computer.

If none of the linked information is helpful, then please let us know exactly when during the scan-to-email process you see the "AN ERROR OCURRED WHILE STARTING THE EMAIL APPLICATION." message. Also, if there is a window title for the pop-up error, please tell us what that window title is as well.

Event Viewer error events you found might be related to your issue, especially if the error is produced every time you try using the scan-to-email. If an error event is produced for each time you try to scan-to-email, please post the details for that event here.

It's possible that is significant.

The Microsoft Fax error might be significant.

I doubt the w32time error is related.

Hi Mailman
I've uninstalled completely as far as I know even into programs finding epson folders and deleting them, reinstalled and is no different.the error comes up every time I try,it happens at the final stage after it has scanned accepted the custom size I've chosen and picked outlook express as my email client I then click OK and the box pops up,with the heading attach to email and inside an error occurred while starting the email application.everything else works fine.
I havent compared my settings with my wifes yet thats next.I am a little slow on these things, you guys are showing places I did'nt know existed.
