    This is not an IE/OE problem - please post your OS and I will move your thread to the appropriate forum where you are more likely to get a response.

    I am running Windows XP and had the same problem. This is the answer I got and it resolved my problem:
    CAUSE: The "Compress old files" is one of the option in the Disk cleanup utility and this option is enabled by default when you start the process. Since this option "Compress old files" is enabled by default, when starting the process, the system searches for unused files and collects the information regarding that. The system takes some time during this process and when running the Disk Cleanup process, the system again consumes more time when actually compressing the old files. It is generally recommended to skip this option (by disabling the "Compress Old Files" option in the Disk Cleanup tool) when running the Disk Cleanup process.

    SOLUTION: To solve the process, follow the below mentioned registry tweak to remove this component from the Disk Cleanup dialogue.

    1. Click Start button and select "Run" option.
    2. In the Run dialogue, type REGEDIT and press Enter key. This will open the Registry Editor for Windows XP.
    3. Navigate to the following key.
    HKey_Local_Machine -> software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Explorer -> Volume Caches.

    Note: You can navigate by just clicking the + sign beside the keys.
    4. Under the "Volume Caches" key right-click on the "Compress Old Files" item and select the "Delete" option from the shortcut menu. When confirmed, click the OK button.
    5. Exit the registry and restart the system.

    Now you will not face the system freeze issue when running the Disk Cleanup utility in C: or any other drive.

    Disk cleanup hangs while scanning Compressed Folders:

    Hello reattachick,

    Another solution to this is do system functions such as this in safe mode - F8 on boot up.
