    Hi,

I decided to defrag this morning but first I ran scan disk. Scandisk got to scanning and when it was time to check files and folders it stopped, would move any further. I retried it several times but nothing. I then decided to try and defrag but that isn't happening because I got a message that said that drive C has an error (or errors) and they need to be fixed before I can defrag.. only thing is I can't get scandisk to work.

Any help will be welcomed. (OS windows 98)

    Thanks,

    Hi mich2mom,

It's been a long time since I ran 98, but all OS's do better doing system functions like this in safe mode because there is minimal disk use by backround processes.

    Regards - Charles

I had a similar problem and recieved some great advice that I will share. 1st, always run in "Safe Mode ". Start ScanDisk and run with Automatically Fix unchecked. Click on the advance button and set up this way. Summary=Always Log File:Append (and periodically delete) Crosslinked Files=Ignore (scandisk will tell you about them anyway) Lost File Fragments=Convert to Files Check for Invalid Names and Dates Unselect report for DOS name lengh errors. Now run it and post back what you found.

    What I do

Try this. Go to the start menu/run. Type in msconfig. Uncheck everything so nothing is running in the background. You will have to restart the puter. Then try and run scan disc. When your done with all the cleaning up go back and check all the stuff you want running and restart the puter again.
