When I do a 'start>search' my firewall pops up this message:

'Windows Explorer' from your computer wants to connect to sc.windows.com [207.46.248.249], port 80

Does anyone know what's happening here and why it wants to connect when I'm only searching my computer?

    Thank you.

    Thanks, Neil.

I'm just wondering if I disable 'Automatically Detect Settings from Internet Explorer' will there be any negative effects? I don't have any negative effect from the issue I originally mentioned but was just wondering if it was harmful in any way. The procedure you mention would be very helpful, nevertheless, if I needed to deal with it.

This is caused by Microsoft's Search Companion.

To disable Search Companion, and enable the Search Assistant, read: How To Configure the Search Companion in Windows XP.

You want to select Change Internet search behavior. Click on With Classic Internet Search. You'll have to restart Internet Explorer for the change to take effect.

Now, to disable the Windows XP Search Assistant, make this registry change:

    • Start the Registry Editor (Start > Run > regedit)
    • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ CabinetState \
    • Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > String Value
    • Name the new value Use Search Asst
    • Double-click this new value, and enter no as it's Value data
    • Close the registry editor, and restart Windows

    More info is @ sa.windows.com (sa.windows.com & sc.windows.com both resolve to 207.46.248.249).
