I have a windows xp home edition computer with a SBLive!Value sound card. Problem is I can not update the card. I try to update it but at the end it came with a popup saying that the files that are installed are unrecognized with the driver I have and need to insert the windows xp operating disk to restore the old drivers. How can i solve this problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi merlinone,

Are you installing Creative drivers or the Windows Update ones? Suggest you get the drivers from Creative and install those.

Of course, follow the instructions, but see if there may be support information that relates to your problem. You may need to completely remove the old drivers before updating.

My experience is that the SB drivers that come w/ xp are better than the downloaded Creative drivers.

MS stats say that 40% of all xp issues are related to drivers, so best to keep the xp certified creative drivers that come w/ xp.

I am not completely sure about better overall. But they sure are more COMPATABLE. Which I guess in turn makes them better.

I just checked mine and I see a lot of MS_MMXXX which I believe indicates a Microsoft driver.

There's another tricky issue here. Creative, over the last few years, has made several different versions of their Live, Live Value, Live 5.1, Live 5.1 + MP3 etc. cards; then you had 512 Voice and 1028 Voice permutations and they've used different "stuff" on different cards - even between versions of the same thing. Similarly, the Creative Live Value cards that Dell was using weren't the same as those one bought at retail. It becomes critically important to know exactly what version of the Live Value card one has in order to secure the correct drivers and my experience is that the original driver and software discs vary considerably - Even between seemingly (but not quite) identical like-named Creative Live Value cards.

Haven't been to the Creative Update Site in a long time but I imagine it still requires you to know exactly what card you have. Good Luck.

    ;)

Rockster2U has brought out some EXCELLENT points.

I have a SB Live 5.1 and the drivers on the CD that came with it WOULD NOT work properly.

I downloaded what I THOUGHT were newer ones and they were no good either. I had NO AUDIO at all in Links Golf 2003.

I got angry ( VERY ) removed the drivers. Deleted all I could find related to audio drivers. Shut the machine down, pulled the card. Restarted without it. WHAT A MESS I did what I had to do to clean things up.

Shutdown and plugged the card back in. Restarted and did what needed to be done per the prompts. Let XP do the work and NO problems since. Works better then it ever did.

But also what may come into play here also IS GETTING RID of the OLD before putting in the new. And as long as the card is plugged in it will try to setup. Maybe not correctly but it will setup.

I had to follow the same procedure with a Network card. On a 98SE system.

Agree with you BB, soundcard drivers can be really difficult to remove and reinstall, I think because they have so many "associated" drivers, eg. the joystick/gameport (and I wouldn't guess as to what some of the others are for). It could (??) be easier removing the whole soundcard/driver program though Add/remove Programs (if the audio program is listed), although I have resorted at times to removing everything related to audio in Safe Mode.

I've had a few "battles" with them myself :D (I usually retreat for a day or so and regroup my forces)
