My system includes XP, Norton AV 2005, Outlook, DSL SBC Yahoo. What did I forget?

Off and on lately, and I can't tell you when exactly this happened, but it was happening before I upgraded to NAV 2005 ----

---I get the message in Outlook that there is no response from the POP3 server, and to verify port and SSL settings.

I can send, but cannot receive.

I did see a message on this BBS saying that it is possible that NAV 2005 is the culprit.

Also, it was stated that you don't need to check on the choice to scan incoming mail because the auto-protect does that anyway without your having to check the incoming email choice.

    Is this really true?

I guess I am afraid to test this since I don't want to compromise my system with the possibility of any viruses.

Thanks very much for your help.

This is really the best BBS

Check your event logs around the time this happens and see if there is any additional information. Probably the application log but could be some mention in the system log as well.

    start -> run -> eventvwr.msc

Thanks, Newt, now when I look at the event viewer application log I find a warning source: userenv -that the memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Now, I have an event number, how do I figure out how to change that service to local or network, and how do I know which service is causing the registry to not be freed?

In the system viewer, there is a warning in the source: dhcp - saying that the IP address configured in the network card are different than the IP address being used. No suggestions for this warning as to how to fix.

    This all sounds very complicated.

The Userenv one is pretty much a non-problem unless you have maxed your system and rarely have any free memory. I'd ignore it.

The other one sounds a little nasty and I'd like to see the whole thing. Open an occurrence of the event, click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard, and paste it here.

Thanks Newt for your reply. Below is the info :

    =====================================================
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Dhcp
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1007
    Date: 10/26/2005
    Time: 5:57:42 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: xxxxxxxxxxxx
    Description:
Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address %1. The IP address being used is %2.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    Data:
    0000: 00 00 00 00 ....
    ===========================================================
I did go to the MS fwlink and below is the info: I set my timeout many days ago to the longest possible.

Message: Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address %1. The IP address being used is %2.

    Explanation
The DHCP Client service on your computer did not receive a response from the DHCP server to the DHCP Discover message within the time limit; therefore your computer's IP address was assumed to be invalid, and the DHCP Client service generated another IP address.
If connection with the network is not established using this APIP address, the DHCP Client service will try to contact the DHCP server with a new IP address every five minutes as long as the APIP service is active.
The failure of the DHCP server to respond could be caused by network connectivity issues, DHCP server or DHCP relay malfunction, firewall issues, or a malfunction of your computer's network interface card or driver.

    User Action
If your computer is connected to the network by cable, confirm that the cable is plugged in. If you have a wireless network connection, confirm that you have a signal and the proper credentials for the wireless network.
The DHCP Client service will continue trying to obtain a working IP address until it succeeds. If the network connection is not established automatically, check the following possible causes and take corrective action:
    • The DHCP server is down or not responding.
    • The DHCP relay is not functioning correctly.
    • The network is down.
    • The firewall on your computer is blocking out network broadcast traffic.
    • Your computer's network interface card or driver is not functioning correctly
    =======================================================
I am including this message also from the event viewer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: NETLOGON
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 3095
    Date: 10/26/2005
    Time: 5:57:48 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
    Description:
This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. -- there was no information re: this at the MS fwlink.

Assuming the IP addresses in the error message started with 169, it means that for whatever reason your PC is not being assigned an IP address even though you have the NIC set to automatically receive one.

If you have a home network, I need details. If you simply connect directly to the ISP, then I'm surprised you can still do anything (send email, browse the web, etc.) while this is going on.

Please do the following with data from a time that all is well and a time that you are having the problem. Please do not mask any of the data with %1 or XXX or similar. You'll be creating a text file and posting the contents.

For both reports, you need to be in a cmd window (start -> run -> cmd and OK)

    First time
ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt (the single > redirects the output to the text file)

    Second time
ipconfig /all >> c:\config.txt (the double >> redirects the output and appends to the end of the original text file)

The reason I used the XXX and %1, etc. is because this is a public BBS, and I did it for security purposes.

Do you still want me to send you the event manager messages? Yes, my IP address that is being used starts with 169.254 etc.

I don't have a home network, connect directly to SBC Yahoo via Speedstream modem.

Will send the reports in another message. Is there a way to send just to you for protection?

PM or email will be fine but please know that I won't ever ask you to post any information that could cause you problems. APIA addresses (169.x.x.x) and other private addresses ( 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x ) cannot be used by anyone outside. As far as the internet is concerned, they really don't exist since they are not unique and, for instance, 192.168.0.1 may be in use by thousands of PCs and routers at this moment.

Even if you had a 'real' IP address assigned via your ISP, you would not be putting yourself at additional risk since that address would be easily findable without your posting it as are the IP addresses of any ISPs DNS, DHCP, and mail servers. That's one excellent reason for having a firewall since it blocks any unwanted intrusions.

Thanks Judy. Busy now so it will probably be one day this weekend before I get a decent chance to study things. Hopefully someone else will chime in but if not, I certainly will after a brief delay.

Note: if nothing from me by Monday afternoon, post to the topic to bump it to the top again because it will mean my memory failed me.

Hello Newt, thanks for asking me to remind you to address my issue on Monday. "“ I am however, doing so many Mondays later :)

    RE: SENDING AND RECEIVING EMAILS
I did solve the problem of not receiving my email messages by disabling the NAV scan for incoming mail. Now I can both receive and send emails.

A very odd consequence, however. Sometimes NAV will not load into my systray unless I enable the scan for incoming messages. Then after it is loaded, I uncheck the box to enable scan of incoming emails.

    RE: DHCP ERROR MESSAGE 1007
I was told by someone else that instead of checking "obtain IP address automatically" that I should check: "use the following IP address" and enter 192.168.1.10 in that field and 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet mask field. "This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks ". "

    RE: UPHClean
Since many on this BBS have recommended installing UPHClean, I did so after your last message to me on Oct 29.

Then I saw a message in another thread where the writer was saying that he forgot to change the registry back to "0" - the recommendation to change the "0" to "1" was in the readme.txt.

When I edited the registry to "1" I thought there would be a place other than the event manager where an explanation would be written to explain in more detail than the event manager what the error was and explain some of the error message.

for example, the following is the explanation from UPHClean in the event manager: Source: UPHClean, Event ID 1501 -- " The following handles in user profile hive computer name\user name (S-1-5-21-1202660629-706699826-854245398-1004) have been closed because they were preventing the profile from unloading successfully:
    svchost.exe (788)
    HKCU (0x15c) "

I was under the impression that the explanation from UPHClean ( talked about in the readme.txt ) would explain what handles in svchost.exe and HKCU were causing the problem.
