A friend of mine is haveing a problem connecting his computer, Win 98, to the main computer downstairs, XP Pro. The computers see eachother, the SBC software is installed on both computers, and the networ works just fine for internet. But, the problem is that he can't share files between computers. Is it an issue between XP and Win98 or just a problem with SBC?????

Before, I hooked up a wired network in his house, when both computers had Win98 and it seemed to work just fine, but he moved and now has a Wireless. I know that there relly isn't anyone in this BBS that knows much about Wireless Networking, but help would be greatly appreciated....

    XP / 9X issue.

XP (or any of the NT based systems) won't share resources unless they know 'who' wants to connect.

On a larger business network running a Domain setup, the domain controllers take care of this but smaller, workgroup networks mean he has to do it himself.

All the possible methods will require that both PCs have a username & non-blank password logging on.

    - network settings must include Client for Microsoft Networks and File & Printer Sharing.

    - use the same one for all PCs. Gotta be exactly the same though for both username and password.

    - enable the Guest account on XP (enabled by default on XP-home and disabled by default on XP-PRO) and any logon /w password will do fine.

    - place a copy of all username/password accounts in the local users section of all NT PCs (NT4/2K/XP).

The last option is the most work but is also the most secure by far. And the work only has to be done once.
