When I go to save somethine of modest volume, I get an error message that I don't have enough disk space or memory. I have 2 gigs left on my hard drive and don't know what to do to get more memory. I have 425mg of ram.

I moved this to Other Software, as Word seems to be the issue. It appears that this is a common occurence with word. There are a few M$ pages with solutions on them, click here

    Is this Windows 98/Me?
If so, after a fresh boot, open Explorer and do a Help > About
    What is your Resource Percentage?

The error you're getting is almost always fixed by deleting the "normal.dot" file.

It's a hidden file so in My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>Advanced tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.

With Word closed go to Start>Search (or Find if Win9x) and tell it to search for "normal.dot" (without the quotes). Delete all instances found. When Word is restarted, it will make a new normal.dot.
