I have a Windows 98 machine acting as a fileserver. All my workstations in a particular workgroup map a particular folder with a share-level password to a network drive. In Windows 98, I simply select "Save Password" and the users never have to deal with entering the password.

Now, some of the workstations were replaced with brand new XP Home systems. The "Save Password" checkbox never shows up. Microsoft's Help just tells me to check the box which quite clearly isn't there!

Map the network share from the cmd window via the net use command which will allow a password.

Users being users, I'd suggest you make up a batch file containing the "net use" string you need and put a shortcut to it on the desktop so if they somehow disconnect, they can reconnect themselves.

The /persistent switch whill force the connection at each reboot but somehow a user or two will manage to disconnect which means no connection at next reboot.

Basically, NT systems are user oriented rather than share oriented and approach security in a totally different fashion. You have been hit with one of the differences.

    Is Good!

    Newt,
I found that the /persistent switch will not save the password on reboot although it saves the connection.
So I just created a batch file in everyone's startup folder with the oneliner that connects them every time they login without using the /persistent switch.

    Thanks a lot.
