I save a pic to 'My Pictures' Folder and when I try to open it I am told "Cannot Open This File" and am invited to "Select a program from a list ".

I select the 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' but I - CANNOT - tick the "Always use this Program" box at the bottom of the window. It has been greyed out and will not respond. I have to through the entire procedure for every pic I wish to view.

I have been to the 'Folder Options' area and the JPG and JPEG things ARE matched to WP&FV.

    Assistance GREATLY appreciated.

    John.

    John,

This doesn't directly address your problem, but to circumnavigate it download IrfanView - freeware and recommended by many on the Board.

What happens if you save the file to another folder and try to open it?

Another wheeze - right click on image file > Open with > .....
Effectively the same thing that you have already done without success, but you never know :)

Don't you have to hold down the shift key for that to work?:)

I wanted XP to open my graphics with IrfanView like I did in 98. I changed my file associations in the Folder Settings thingy. I also changed the icons to the traditonal IE icons for JPEGs and GIFs. The changes never last though. XP always ends up using that Picture and Fax thingy to open the graphics again, without me even rebooting! Talk about pushy!

So I compromised with it. It can use its P&F Viewer to open the files, but they keep the IE icons and are edited with IrfanView.

Yeah, XP seems to be more stubborn about giving up assoiations than 98 was. Try the options in Irfanview to change the associations (options>properties>file extensions) . This worked for me after downloading a newer version of Irfanview. When I first got XP I had a version of Irfanview that was pre-XP and the setting wouldn't stick. Downloading a newer version did the trick.

I have version 3.85 and XP is listed as one of the Windows versions it supports.

edit: I changed the file association using IrfanView's properties. They now open with IrfanView, but now they use the IrfanView icon instead of their own. In 98 I could change the icons using Folder Properites, but XP doesn't let you change icons unless you go back to the default program. It only lists Change and Repair as options instead of Advanced if you change a file association.

I checked in the Registry and the icons are what I set them to be using the XP Folder Properites, but they're still displayed using the IrfanView icon. There's gotta be a way around this.

    Hey hawk,
I've been messing with this a bit and managed to figure out a registry hack to change the icon. Which file type are you trying to change? For jpg's look at this key in the registry.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IrfanView.jpg\DefaultIcon

Change the "default" value data to the path of the file that has the icon you want. If you want to do it for bmp's, tif's etc. you would have to change those also. They're all located together (in seperate keys) in the registry. What icon are you trying to use?

edit: you need to either log off or restart your computer for the change to take effect.

I changed those value already, but Windows doesn't accept the change. Thanks anyway.

    Hawk ...

The answer is simple, but it's not obvious. :) Go back to the default program, change the icon, THEN change the file association back to the program you want to use.

And get the 3.91 Irfanview release. Lots of nice new features added in 3.9 and a few more in 3.91. Also a new plug-in set with 3.9.
