Doesn't work either in mail (when I want to save photos sent as attachment), nor in the browser (when I want to put some web jpg on the desktop to look at later). I may have deleted the "download manager ", some vague memory of that, quite a long time ago. Inadvertant and didn't seem important at the time, it was sort of a nuisance. Long enough ago that when I restore to the oldest restore point it does not fix the problem. Because they're both gone, I'm assuming they are related.

How can I get back the "download manager" and especially the "save image as" function without messing up everything else?

    Have Netscape 7.1 on XPhome

I've stumbled on this forum and am delighted, I think the preventative maintenance page will change my life. Thanks a lot.

Your post did not make much sense, until I noticed this paragraph: How can I get back the "download manager" and especially the "save image as" function without messing up everything else?
The Save image is a download, and, you must have a cluttered download manager. The information in it is not necessary after you have completed the operation, but it comes a time when it will not take any more downloads.
I suggest that you open the download manager, and, see for yourself a long list of already completed and forgotten downloads. I remove them as soon as the job is done, but you can do it more rapidly, as well , and, get acquainted with your Profile.

    Welcome to the Forum, ebm!

    ebm,

I think both oshwyn5 and Westside are right on, and doubt that you uninstalled the Download Manager itself. Once you clear the Download List, that should cure what ails your Netscape. If not, you can do this:

Exit Netscape, and Quick Launch, then open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to the *.slt folder
    Delete the downloads.rdf file
Open Netscape, and a pristine downloads.rdf file will be rebuilt

Once you have resolved this problem, I would strongly suggest that you upgrade your browser. Netscape 7.1 has security vulnerabilities, and other serious problems which have been addressed in Mozilla 1.7.12, and in Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0.7. We will be more than happy to help you with the upgrade. You absolutely will not lose any of your Profile data by upgrading...

P.S. Happy to hear that the Preventive Maintenance page was helpful!

    Ramona,
I was always wondering, if deleting most or all entries in the Download Manager would accomplish the same as deleting the file. I don't know how many downloads are required before the DM goes tilt, but it should work.
It does not matter if you use the download manager as such, each download will go in the list.

    Westside,

As a general rule, deleting the downloads list does work, but I have helped users who have let the list build for such a long time that they are unable to delete the download list. In this case the only option they have is to delete the downloads.rdf file...

Tried all that and it doesn't work yet.

Thanks for the help so far. I made a backup copy of the Profiles folder, found the .slt folder, deleted the (5) Cache folders, the download.rdf, XUL.mfl, history.dat files, checked the open download manager button, (the accept all images button was already checked) and rebooted. Still can not "save image as ", and the download manager does not open on the screen. Also, when I look in the file manager, I see the XUL.mfl has rebuilt itself to (from 2900kb originally) to 1900kb, the history.dat file (which was 412kb) is now 10 kb, there is one Cache folder, but there is no download.rdf file.

Actually along the way I tried emptying the download.rdf file. I sent it to notepad, deleted contents, saved as download.rdf, yes. overwrite. Rebooted and it wouldn't "save image as" do I deleted.

Don't know if any of that info is relevant. Got any ideas what else I might try?

Also deleted mimeTypes.rdf and it also does not show up in the file manager now. I do have the backup of both this and download file I can copy back to the .slt folder

I don't know what you did. I never did anything so extreme. I actually did what I mentioned before, and confirmed by Ramona. There is no need to delete the download.rdf, if you decide to delete the entries from the Tools|Download Manager. It may take a while, but it works. You can select one, and then holding down the Cntrl key, select the others, and press Delete. It works.

    No download manager

Back to square one. This was my original suspicion, download manager has (somehow!!--what did I do??) disappeared. I went to Tools/Download Mgr, nothing happens.

Did you try any Save as, or any downloads? If you cleared the download manager it may not be there. I have never done that operation, so, I didn't know what would happen.
I have NS7.2, and with 7.2 closed, I deleted the download.rdf file from the profile. The file did not show up when I just opened 7.2, and Tools|Download Manager brought up the download manager, nice and empty. I hope that you did not expect any more than that. Then, I select an image, right click on it, and saved it, and what do you know? There was one entry in the download manager, and there was a download.rdf file in the profile.
Please, try all steps. I am not sure about 7.1, which I have not had since 7.2 came out, but you should get the same results.

Do you still have the full installer for your version of netscape ? If so , backup your profiles folder just in case and reinstall over itslef.
    If not, http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive.jsp
    get the archived download.
